I have a Thinkpad X40 with 4 and 8 cell batteries, and they do exactly that. It's clearly how they're designed because it doesn't cause a problem.

Same movement in my T42 and T61. Never lost power while on battery so don't worry about it.

I think that's common. I have x60 with 8 cell which does the same.
