these are some of the great heavyweights in all of latin music!!! i'm especilly a big fan of orestes he has such a masterfull aproach to timbal, nobody else sounds like him.unfortunately i haven't seen him upclose i guess i have to make a trip to the westcoast some time!!!
Nothing against Tito, Tito was the man, but for me...Orestes is the man. He's so innovative. I know him personally, I know you probably do to Sean, we are both Nor Cal drummers...but Orestes is constantly finding new licks and he's an innovator. I just feel more umph' in his drumming.
But without Tito, timbales wouldnt be what they are today
Tito Puente was a Latin music Icon. Great percussionist, timbales and vibes, great arranger, great band leader, however, not a better timbalero than Orestes. Vilato has much more technique than Puente. For example, Tito could not play danzon, he approched the timbal like a trap drummer. Orestes is the best danzonero on timbales, he is a true timbalero and not a trap drummer.Orestes could play any style on timbales, Tito did not have Orestes versatility.
I agree that Orestes is one of the great Timbaleros of our time, but, okay, let's say Tito Puente never existed, where would the Timbales instrument and our music be today?
TI MON BO revisited. The originals giving their seal of approval from above. Nobody plays bongo' like Dandy, Orestes, the best timbalero in history and Montalvo, a general in his own right. Pa' la escuelita to' el mundo, as Patato would say. A COMER ! Dario (Miami)

I'm absolutely agree with arouttenberg and Doctorumba, Vilató is more melodic than Tito, Tito was faster and I prefer him in vibes.
