@batinas14,all correct there, you left out however that the survey was commission by King Charles 2nd. He had "chartered" some land to Pennsylvania, which reduced Maryland and upset the inhabitants of that State.
Education and great entertainment in a lovely song, great stuff. As a complete "layman", who knows nothing of musical instruments, I think Mark Knopfler must be one of the best guitarists around.
I have to admit, as much as I love music, I just discovered this song recently! OUT OF THE LOOP RIGHT! My brother almost backhanded me last week, he pulled out this CD recording with Mark knopfler and Sweet baby James, I now love this song! It has such a nostalgic feel to it, and it tells of a true story.
@italobambino43 Another great song about Philly is Peter Cincotti's "Goodbye Philadelphia." Check it out. Just 50 miles up the road is Allentown, immortalized by Billy Joel's "Allentown."
The MasonDixon Line was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the resolution of a border dispute between British colonies in Colonial America. It forms a demarcation line among four U.S. states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia. In popular usage, especially since the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Mason-Dixon Line symbolizes a cultural boundary between the Northern United States and the Southern United States (Dixie).
I had read this dispute began early on between Lord Baltimore and the elderly William Penn. Lord Baltimore tried to claim the prosperous port of Philadelphia as being part of Maryland. William Penn was living in England, and had to sail for the colonies to take control of the situation.
@batinas14 That's close, but not exactly right. It was a property dispute between the Penn(Pennsylvania) and the Calvert familys(Maryland). What is now Delaware was owned by the Penns at the time. The "Crown" stones, placed every 5 miles have the Penn family's Coat of Arms on one side and the Calvert's on the other. The "mile marker" stones had a "M" on the Maryland side and a "P" on the Penn side, facing Delaware and PA
this is the best song that i ever heard

Knopfler n Taylor are brilliant on this. Good knowledge on Mason-Dixon Line. I betcha Americans do not know their history until this.
