They have a great meaty and gritty tone that cannot be found in any other bass. They usually have two outputs mono/stereo (one bridge pu, the other neck pu). The usual method is to hook one to a regular bass cab and the other to a guitar amp. That is where the tone comes from ( i.e Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, etc). Though, it doesn't sound as if this bass is in that config. He is probably just using the mono output, or doesn't have a model with the stereo jack.
