I'd suggest doing a stretch program for yourself, repeat every day you can. And slow slow technique training. Try putting targets on wall and slowly kicking them. Waist training helps a lot so try raising your knee always up high.
You need to cut out the step forward before executing the kick. It's a bad habit that students can catch. It's a bad habit becuase you are telegraphing the kick before you can execute it. Props on pivoting on the ball of you foot verses the heel. Also props on pointing out the correct alignment for the sidekick.
Over 32 years, I have trained with 5 different instructors. They all said to turn on the ball of your foot.
I had one student who turned on his heel. His kick was very poor as he had incorrect body alignment and was not able to balance when kicking slowly (as in this tutorial). I taught him to turn on his toes.
I am not surprised you find the heel turn difficult. Perhaps you misunderstood your teacher.
It may be that I misunderstood. I have never turned on my heel because I never could get it to work. I think I'll stick with turning on the ball of the foot. Thanks.
stand on one leg while executing different kicks slowly with the other leg. i know it's hard but try doing it for about one minute for each kick and on each side. you will be surprised how effective this is. i tell you, it worked wonders from me.

@hakuboshi1
just lean back a little while keeping you back straight.leaning back makes it easier to gain height.
anirudhkrishnamani 2 years ago
@hakuboshi1 I wouldn't worry about that, sidekicks are best suited to mid section or lower.

This is great stuff. Is it the same when you kick with the lead leg?
marvs420 2 years ago
My TKD master always said to rotate on the heel rather than the toes, but I find that very difficult. kyryllo, do you find it makes much difference?
