this hung famly [ wong fe hung] form is the key form that unlocks the 5 animal 5 element 18 tec forms from the famous tiger & crane form that is in many styles including hung gar [hun gee gung] good stuff jc
well yeah the animal forms do have a reputation for being ineffective even in kung fu circles, don't ask me why. I have yet to see evidence of a fighter using an animal style effectively in a fight. I know that an animal kung fu stylist got beat up in one of the first UFC's.
If anyone has any proof of it's effectiveness I am always open to see it, until then it remains under a big question mark.
@redtortoise76 interesting, most of the animals are moves that would be entirely illegal in the UFC (pulling out windpipe, putting finger in windpipe or fingers into eyeballs, gouging out eyeballs (again by putting fingers into them), striking throat or vitals
it doesn't surprise me that a self defense style was beat in ring rules. this would likely happen with most martial arts
@redtortoise76 Let me know when you're in Boston sometime, we ll go to the MIT student center and train. Also, you do realize it'll look a little different in a real fight right? like the tiger claw will just look like I'm grabbing someone's arm, etc.
@redtortoise76 The style as I understand it is more pretty to look at and conceptual than practical, however things like splashing palms and dragon holding balls are great for defense, the first allows you to defend from low kicks and round house, the latter is strong for midsection punches. Hand in hand with something like aikido it might be a strong form for grappling follow up. however the aikijutsu forms are already strong enough, I cant see a reason to use somethign else.
What Style do you study? The Animal Techs are only ineffective in the wrong and nervous hands. In properly trained hands can be quite deadly in fact the two systems I teach are based off the Five Animals of the Shaolin Temple.

WHAT!? kung fu came from studying animals?
bdkelevra 3 years ago
no, but the animal forms is based upon animal movement. it merely resembles animal movement, and not very much at that
