America into America, or does not include Antarctica. Five continent model does two of the above three. And the Four continent model does all three. The use of America on its own is often shorts for US of America because most common continental models do not include a single America.

It was an issue of character limit and the fact that there is no dispute over Australia being a continent. While Africa also has no controversy in the continental models, there was room to include it with the limit.

However, I know continent are not defined by tectonic plates since plates include oceanic plates, and continents are land mass only. The major plates are African, Antarctic, Indo-Australian, Eurasian, N. American, S. American and Pacific. The 6 continent convention with Eurasia would be the closest to this.
