Wow thats nice... Seems like its a bit shaky and fast... plus the Easy Stars are a bit loud haha... Im doing the same thing for airsoft but making my own custom built design... Going to be able to drop Nerf Rockets...
@ScoutSniper127 There is, but it's a little expensive and more complicated. I was under a time crunch to get this one ready for an event, so I had to keep it as simple as possible. Might do an autopilot in the future, not sure yet.
@SuperScguy Distance is limited mainly by interference around here, which is substantial... I just moved to a more rural area though, so I'll be able to test this setup in a better environment. Currently the range is about half a mile before I start getting significant issues with the video feed; I'm expecting closer to a full mile with no interference. For this flight I was watching the plane, but I now fly from a monitor and will be getting video goggles soon.
@pinchofreality No problem, make sure you link me to the video when you get it done! I haven't been doing much Airsoft lately so I haven't worked a lot on the latest UAV but it should come about in the future.
@pinchofreality I actually don't know what kind of range I get because we have some pretty bad interference around here. Once I try in a rural area I'll post up results.
Amazing video, I think using a small UAV like this could be useful when playing paintball! I also like the music very much! Can anyone tell me the name of the music please?
@w7mag Sorry it took so long to get back to you... I'm happy with it, but we have significant interference here so that kinda stinks. Otherwise it works well.
Depends... higher for better coverage, lower for better detail. I'm seriously considering a dual camera setup for my next UAV, with one zoomed and one unzoomed and a switch between them.
UAV stands for "Unmanned Aerial Vehicle" not "Autonomous Aerial Vehicle". The vast majority of UAV's are not fully autonomous and require a high degree of human interaction. In any case, this was built to be a simple, scale-ish version of the RQ-11 Raven for MilSim observation use under my control, not autonomy. Also, there are several autopilot systems that don't require a laptop, only onboard electronics.
Unmanned just means there's nobody IN the plane. Autonomous would be flying on autopilot. Regardless I'm planning to build at least one UAV capable of autonomous flight. Easy Star is probably the best platform to start with!
i have a DX6i and the AR 6200 receiver, all i need is a plane now im looking at easy star, but im confused with the kits, i dont want RTF cz it ocmes with a crappy controller, i basically want the RTF version without the receiver and trainsmitter, theo ther version is just the plane body with the motor.
They have a receiver-ready version available for $130, but the stock motor is a little wimpy. I'd recommend the cheap motor I used from Grayson Hobby (the Super Sonic V2). It comes as a motor + ESC combo for $40. You need to do a slight motor mount modification. If you buy the kit, this motor, and some inexpensive servos you're looking at about $130-140 + whatever battery and radio you use, which is a decent deal for what you get.
thats awful, 150 us comes to 220 australian dollars, i can get a RTF 4 channel brushless cessna for that much.
im getting the DX6i and 50 dollars worth of servo, battery, motor etc, and gonna slap it all onto a coroplast fueslage and wing i made for less than 10 dolalrs... valu for money...
That's all I had laying around :D It's not heavy enough to matter, and I get about 30 minutes of flight time. With multiple flights per session, it works out pretty well.
I'm going for lighter weight in my next one, though. I also just acquired a 5V transmitter, so I'll probably go with a smaller 2S on it.
GJ, just one comment. That 730 mah 3S is an overkill. I have a 500mw TX and I can run 10min on 2S 180mah. (draws about 120). I got a 5V camera though. Not sure if urs is drawing more.

Hmm i know this may be old.. but there probably has to be a way to put it in auto-pilot. like so you can adjust the camera to have like hot view...

how do you land it? like does it hurt the uav in any way?
isueu9 2 years ago
@isueu9 It just skids onto the grass, doesn't hurt it at all. With the spoilers up you can slow it to nearly a stop before dropping it to the ground.
MadMonkey572 1 year ago
Wow,
That's really cool.
Have you gone 2.4 yet and if so , how well is it working with the 900mhz video?
And now that you've had this for a while,
Are you happy with the range and picture quality of the rangevideo setup?
Thanks!
Looks like you answered all my other questions in the descriptions area. Nicely done. Paul

for it to be a true UAV you need auto pilot functionality, and a gps on there too, all feeding back to a laptop.
jsut want to make sure, was the footage on the screen coming live from the plane.?

didnt realize "unmanned" still meant someone controlling it with a transmittter, but ye good work, i want a similar set up on my easy star.
