I had almost forgotten about this early MTV-era video from Queen. Seeing it now after almost 30 years brings back great memories. I think the Hot Space album gives people a chance to hear 80s funk/techno/disco from a great band, as oppposed to spending money on an album by Wang Chung, INXS, Wham!, Culture Club, or Duran Duran which most of us who listen to hard rock wouldn't enjoy hearing. Hot Space gives you all you need of 80s dance music plus a few hints of their signature rock sound.

One bone I have about the video, I know it's not meant to be like a performance, but for a lot of it they don't seem to have Freddie getting into what he's doing quite as much. Like at about 1:01 when he sings out "Love!!!!!", I'd expect him to normally like get into that, belt it out and it would show. Instead he's sitting there appearing to only calmly say it. I just seems offsetting a bit. Otherwise though I do love this video and this song, very original and just... awesome! haha

Yeah, the video may be silly now - but remember in 1982 we were rolling up on 1984. There was a huge surge of interest in the George Orwell book and the dystopian, authoritarian society it described. Add in the cold war and you had a lot of these types of themes showing up in popular culture. I remember liking this song better as a kid - but I don't remember ever seeing the video. Maybe for good reason. :)

Calling All Girls is the third track on the second side of the album Hot Space and it was written by Roger Taylor. It was the fourth single from the album. It was released as a single in the US in the Summer of 1982 where it peaked at #60.

The video is a parody of the George Lucas film THX 1138, and is rarely seen. Both Taylor and May openly expressed disdain for the video in their commentary for Greatest Video Hits 2, Taylor claiming the song's message had nothing to do with "fucking robots".

This is a damn good song. Freddie's voice is perfect for the song. The guitars almost sound reggaeish with a mix of distortion. And I love the flanger before the final verse. Other than Put Out The Fire, this is one of the only saving graces from HOT SPACE. The video is kind of lame though.
