  • Ok so I have yet another problem. One I really can'tfix on my own. So i'm in pose mode, and I click one the controller bone , then the first finger bone. With both of the bones selected I copy location which works fine, but when I try to copy rotation nothing rotates. How can I fix this? Thanks

  • GER!i hav a mac evry time i try to do ALT s nothing happens!

  • im having trouble with the fingers,,when im finished rigging ang parented it to the model, all the finger twisted in the middle finger. can someone help me fix this

  • i have a problem,,,when i finished rigging and parenting the bones to the model,,all the fingers twisted in the middle,,i dont know how to fix it,,can someone help me

  • I can't do the ctrl+alt+c thingy? It doesn't do anything. Are the controls the same on Mac?

  • im having trouble with my elbow pivot joints. whenever i press "shift i", for some reason my characters arm shoots out in the direction of the small pivot armature. i cant get it to act like the knee one

  • Hey Ward. I am asking you a favor quickly. I am just curious if you have any free time you would be able to come help us out with rigging and possibly 3D modelling on our 3D MMORPG project. We have 23 people. Our, as you can say, BETA-Site can be found here: vxtream.com

    Thanks so much!

  • ward 7299, where did you get all of your blender experience?

  • I'm having some trouble with my fingers. I'm using version 2.56, and I've done everything exactly as you've said, but when I add the IK constraint, the fingers bend to the side rather than upwards. It's kinda hard to explain, I'll post a quick video to show you what I mean.

  • Is this this 2.55

  • 20.000 viewer :D

  • when i get to the point of parenting bones, theres always something going wrong. Either another set of bones are created on top of each other, when i parent bones together, only the opposite end of the bone follows and the rest stays in place, or simply nothing. Do u think u can help me there :/

  • 25:36

    save this guy.. save it!

    luls, amazing tutorial man! :D

  • For me wend y marc X-AXIS Mirror and y select the corect bone and CTRL+R , is do nothing

  • @adrianseverus Did you flip the names? It has to be Bone.L or Bone.R to work.

  • I have a problem at 00:44 - when I move the end of the bone down, the entire bone rotates along its own axis and I can't rotate it back! This means the axes don't line up for later on!

  • @LuminousReality use Ctrl + R to rotate the bones in edit mode

  • What is the shortcut for opening the window in your top left corner?

  • How did you make the little window open on your top left corner? Can you tell me the shortcut?

  • hey guys a little tip here, after you are all done making the fingers parented and have all the Ik constraints correct. You an actually make another bone and have all the finger ik controllers have a size lock so when ever you size that one bone it sizes all of them at once.

  • whenever i do, copy rotation, it always deforms the bone. PLZ HELP!!

  • @Sangheili15 nvm, i found it

  • I got a problem, when I added the elbow and then attached the IK on the elbow with the arm, the arm kind of went crazy and popped out of place and changed position completely (it moved outside of the model). When I move the elbow around the arm doesnt move the way it should. I have tried messing around with the axis on the arm but that doesn't work, how can I fix this?

  • This is an interesting and usefull setup...

but I would not use it on fingers the way you have it...

I find finger to need more flexablity in animation

plus this set up with the scaling controler finger seems to cause jitter problems around 90 degree rotation (as in when trying to make a fist...)

Still I love doing Rigging experiments where something different is used that I have not seen before...

    So... cool...

  • Has anyone found that a thumb setup like this can't really grip the way a human thumb would grip (eg. the haft of a weapon)? If you study your own hand, you find that the path which the tip of the thumb takes is immediately incident to the path the fingers take as they curl. The only immediate solution with this rig is to work directly with the IK constraint bone at the end of the thumb, rather than scaling its parent. This way, you can position the thumbtip closer in toward the palm centre.

  • lol, i do blender way to much lol, when i typed johnny blender into the search engine on youtube, i followed it up with .l

then i right clicked the video 2 times before i remembered to left click it lol :)

  • @Ickathu nice :D

  • @ward7299 This Is Great You made me intrested in this that im making and alien model but its weird and im making a tutorial of how to make the alein.

  • @Ickathu haha i get that sometimes too

  • fixed it lol i needed to have on my thie selected chain length to 1 other wise didnt work :S

  • right i got over the last problen now i have a new one :(( you can see im good lol) when i want to add the thie to the hip and keep the offset the whole upper rig takes a big spazm and turns in some wird way i cant fix and i dont know what to do any ideas?

  • i have a problem when i do the hand and i get it in position in edit mode and then switch to pose the bones change place like get smaller and lose their original place any ideas why?

  • Had a probolem at 23:29 when using Ctrl R to fix the rotation problems. It actually moved the .R bone to the same side of the mesh as the .L bone. I figured a way around it, by selecting the .R bone that needs to be fixed, then de-selecting X-Axis Mirror under Armature tab, then hitting Ctrl N and selecting "Clear Roll (Z-Axis Up)", I was able to get the same rotation as the left side...just in case anyone else had that problem. Interested though why I was having that problem, any ideas??

  • @Blender3D1234 You could put the cursor in midle and from Top view rotate around the mesh and then scale the amature to the y axis. I guess

  • You are too good! thanks a lot! I have a question, let's say i want a hand to grab something..umm a glass. How do I do this? If i add a bone for the glass, how do I make it follow the hand without any jerk?? Can someone please help me:(:( Thx:)

  • I have a problem: How I can move something to different layer? Or how I can get that Layer menu so I can see it? :D

Thanks a lot if you can give a hint :P

  • "m" brings up the layer menu, then you just click on the layer you want to put it on

  • very very good ! thanks

  • The bones on mine wont shrink they only get shorter

  • remember to use "alt + s" to shrink

  • @ward7299 My thing does not work when im pressing ctrl r it just moves is to the other side.

  • the bones on mine just turn into like a shard or sliver when I rotate them and they get anll twisted and mangled

  • you are a blender God... thanx 4 all d tutz... they are great help...

  • that rig looks easy to make, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge !

  • Hey Im having trouble. I connected the IK bones to the controller bones ( 13:34 ) and then moved the IK bones to Layer 2. I then parented all the fingers to the hand bone with KEEP OFFSET. Then I turned the second layer back on. Then went into pose mode. Then chose the IK bone of the index finger and the adjacent bone to it and hit shift+i to add a constraint with 3 chain lengths. But, I cant make it move. When I hit "s" it does not scale it at all. Any ideas?

  • which bone are you trying to scale? it should be the controller bone, not the IK

  • Yeah im trying to scale the controller. WHen i push "S" and move my mouse around the bone stays still and doesnt change at all and nothing happens even though there is a dotted line telling me that scale is in action.

  • I had the same problem.

And I realised I forget to switch off the "move object centers only" button (next to the rotation/scaling pivot button)

That took 1h from my life. :D

  • Thanks! It works now. =)

  • try changing the chain lengths to 4 that's what I had to do to get it to work

  • s'all good fixed it :)

  • how did you solve the problem? Because I have the same one here. ^^

  • I disjointed hand and lowerarm bone and it works now. Must have skipped the part where this was done in the video..

  • yeah i think i forgot to do that at that point, and go back to it in a later video :P

  • hey man

im having problems when i go to add an ik constraint it says cant add ik tip cannot be linked to ik root

and i'm clicking the hand then arm

  • hand rig with the IK finger controls are amazing!!

You Sir, might be the next Blender rigging God.

  • do you hit ctrl+z to undo, when you pose him then jump back, or is it, alt+r and alt+g to reset rotation and location?

  • It's either.

  • Really goob, but I wouldnt parent the elbow control to the hand bone.

  • You have great tutorials!
