E-Stop cuts electrical power to the ride....and what are coaster brakes designed to do when power is cut to them? That's right...engage. So the train would simply slow to a stop. It takes power to open a brake...power failure closes it.

@259racer this is an emergency stop... not the pre-launch sequence... if you actually paid close attention you'd notice that the engine roar that plays as the train is supposed to have launched is playing, the green and yellow lights are turned on, also indicating the intended launch, and the brakes are rising up again, where as when the train pulls in to get ready to launch, they dont move until right before the launch, so this video IS of an emergency stop, and not a pre-launch.

You can E stop a rollercoaster at any time, but if it is allready in a coasting or launching motion the ride must be on a set of brakes in order to stop. However, some rollercoasters have onboard remote brakes (namely vekoma) and are able to stop at any time.

Indeed, my friend got a rollback today due to a launch abort near the end of the launch. Essentially the cable stopped pulling the ride and the brake fins came up. So, while the ride had no chance of completely stopping, it did not make it over the hill.

IF I remember correctly, TTD's launch is driven by a pneumatic drive shaft that winds up the cable on a giant spool. If that's the case then my guess is they just cut off the pressure to the driving parts of the launch system to stop giving it energy along with throwing up the brakes to remove the energy it already has.
