Spectacular, an absolute must-see for anyone. Too bad it is slightly out of sync, so that Mr. Kaye seems to be conducting a little late, and the sharpness of his intention isn't adequately showing. He is amazing. He's the conductor every orchestra player secretly dreams about, but never happens to play for. He is smart, extremely clear in his intention, amusing, moving at times, crazy and unpredictable, and Music is his natural friend. He will lift you off your chair.. Enjoy.
I love how this hasn't gotten any dislikes! ^_^ Danny Kaye, you are a master of your craft! You continue to influence so many even after your time on this Earth! May you live forever in memory!
it doesn't matter that he couldn't read music and didn't play an instrument. He had perfect pitch. He knew the music inside out using his ear. What a gift!
You have to keep in mind that most of the comics of yester year, honed their craft in vaudville, or on radio. Today's comics are more of the ones who have someone write there jokes.
Danny Kaye was such and still is a wonderful man! Well, he still is in my heart. It's so sad, he died before I was even born, before my parents were even married! I was born in the wrong time, should have been in the thirties, or 1700's at the earliest..though I would probably like to be in the thirties or forties more! I'm fans of all these older actors/ actresses! Michael Crawford, Danny Kaye, Charles Dance, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball...etc. and much more ! 'Sigh' born in the wrong time....
Thanks so much for posting these videos! I have been waiting many years to see this concert again! He is a great artist, and his mouvements for conducting so clear, so musical! Thanks again, this is a great lesson of how to conduct!
lol....um....one thing i must say.....hehe...my Dad and Danny Kaye where very close friends. (My Dad's name is Robert F. Brunner,) Anyways One thing about Danny Kaye that my dad mentioned is that Danny never could play an instrument or conduct music....therefore that said.....lol...he was faking this whole performance. =)
I had heard that as well, that he couldn't read music at all. I can only guess at the practice time they put it for a performance like this for it to be so flawless...and of course wonderfully entertaining! A perfect clip to show anyone that thinks classical music is "boring"!
Something my dad used to tell me about Danny Kaye is that despite the fact that he couldnt read music he only had to practice once to get it right. (USAULLY...)
It is wonderful to see that this September 1981 NY Phil concert (the only one of his orchestra concerts that he would permit to be recorded) is in circulation. I knew DK quite well and was lucky enough to attend several of his concerts - and rehearsals - with symphony orchestras. He usually had 3 rehearsals with a major orchestra, and I can certainly confirm that he could not read music. I am a conductor myself and I attempted to catch him out on several occasions ... !! In fact I showed (cont)
(cont) ..several scores of the pieces he conducted to him and he was fascinated to look at them but clearly could not read the notes !! If any of DK's friends read this, I would love to be in contact ..... I would be happy to give more details of his rehearsals and how he prepared his concerts if anyone is interested ......
my dad was one of his good friends, he performed several times with him. unfortuantely, my dad passed away on January 5th of this year. I can talk to you about some of the memories he shared with me regard Danny if you want.
I adore danny kaye and actually am doing research on him for myself when I stumbled upon this. I didnt know that he did anything like this. Tell me more!
all done by ear - if you are a musician you would know how remarkable it is to conduct an orchestra AND gain their respect *without* reading music !!! Rather than say "4 after B ... blah blah", he rehearsed by singing exactly what he wanted them to do....
Hhaha he just took her by the face and neck and planted one right on her XD and I totally agree with the above comment. I've been in music since highschool and too many conductors are way too stiff. XD
did she respond his kiss? she seems to..
