He doesn't necessarily need to catch it with two hands.
That is for flyballs.

No always catch the ball with two hands when possible. At higher levels shortstops and second baseman redirect the ball to their throwing hand using the glove never actually catching it. The closer your throwing hand is to the glove less time it takes to get it out. The higher levels you play the more crucial that is. Because the game becomes faster.
