the menacing 'meno mosso' after the opening is basically in the same tempo as the 'vivo', because one measure of the 'vivo' equals one half note of the 'meno mosso'. this gives the impression that 'gnomus' is in one tempo, which it is not (at least in the ravel orchestration).
Ok, I'm trying to remember which movement it is of this piece I heard a few years that still gets stuck in my head to this day. It goes "doo do do loo dooo do do do do do do do-di-do do do dooo, do do-di-do do do dooo do do-dooo"
Thus far I've ruled out any of the promenade movements, as well as this one.
I really wish text were more helpful in this matter.
@Philboy50 It didn't sound loud to you cause the microphone wasn't at the source of the sound. I'm a horn player in an orchestra that's playing this piece and I sit about ten feet away from the person who uses that percussion instrument (slapstick) and I almost jump every time because it is so loud. When you're next to the slapstick, you definitely want to cover your ears because it actually hurts your ears.
@robhighnam A few years ago I heard the observation that it takes at least two people to make music: one to make the beautiful sounds and the second to appreciate them. I can't speak for more serious players, but having taken about six or so years of violin and a couple of self taught ones of guitar, I'd have to agree. To truly master something you have to really push yourself, often beyond the point of being able to enjoy it directly.
what's the name of the instrument at 2:28?

Been watching orchestras all night on Youtube.
Gergiev is the first conductor that I could manage to follow the beat/tempo
to him movements so far. Seems odd.
I find myself wanting to go to the Chicago Museum of Art now.

@pineapplepeanuts
Very true.
All you need to do is watch vids of Karajan or Bernstein, or Salonen or Dudamel or Rattle to see it.
*wishes he were a conductor*

any clap for Ravel
who re-arranged from piano to Orchestra ?
abelbeau99 6 months ago
@abelbeau99 : I meant "conducting" - Sorry I didn't specify......
SordidGuy 6 months ago
@SordidGuy
I also meant that Mussorgsky composed this piece for piano in 1874,
the french composer Maurice Ravel elaborated the version for orchestra in 1922
( and Emerson Lake and Palmer in modern rock in 1971)
Greetings from Italy ( and French Antilles) :=))

It's so cute when the percussion men cover their ears. I mean they must be careful to protect their ears but it's weird.

@diefagggotdie you have no idea how loud those cymbal rolls can be, I sat 10-15 feet from it and it was still painfully loud.
BRp4e 1 year ago
@BRp4e No, I think they were protecting their ears from the whipcrack... it's a very loud instrument, especially with one the size of theirs!
