  • Contrary to the song, the 17 foot sea wall was not in place until after the storm and a few years later withheld the devastation of another powerful hurricane with minimal effects.

  • 111 years ago, my great grandfather was recruited to be the island's aftermath cleanup in disposing the bodies...he was a part of the 'dead gang' and worked 30 minutes at a time before a break of as much provided alcohol needed on his break to get through the next 30 minutes of work. My great grandfather brought home a large sea shell that has been in our family since he returned home. My grandma's oldest sister was 2 months old that fateful day in September 1900.

  • testing 123... testing

  • This has still been the worst natural disaster to strike our country. Between 6,000 and 12,000 people were killed in one night. When I listen to Tony singing this I can just see his family washing away. That truly happened with many, many thousands of people.

  • tony rice sums it up so well one of the best pickers i have ever heard

  • Great music, great song, and historic photos. However, to make one historical correction, the Galveston seawall wasn't built until AFTER the 1900 hurricane (and the reason it was built).

  • What a story, what a voice, what a musician. Tony, we still love you.

  • I love to hear Tony sing the stories.

  • excellent..has anyone got charlie waller and duffeys version??

  • Exactly what I was wondering.

  • Right on. Perfectly suited for Tony.
