The holy bible contains hundreds of direct contradictions and this is all the proof needed that it cannot all be true. When they wrote the King James version there were thousands of changes made to correct "errors". The Christian church was opposed to education and progress (still is) for centuries until they had no choice but to accept it. They responded by setting up their own education system to make sure people would never learn that they are the source of most problems on the planet.

The thing is, until fairly late on most Christians were Catholic (because they killed the ones who weren't). Only the priests read the Bible, because it was in Latin, and then they preached sermons to the lay people.

@cunnidvd actually references in the OT to the afterlife are ambiguous at best, hence the ongoing lack of consensus of whether traditional Hebrews believed in an afterlife at all. There are some verses that one can infer an afterlife, but some say they are figurative, death meaning separation from god, much like Adam's death in leaving the garden. Whatever their beliefs, they didn't present too prominently in the Old Testament.

The Jealous God part comes from Christianity's polytheistic roots. It's something Christians don't like to research or acknowledge. Most of the bible is about using peoples vulnerabilities to brainwash them into the servitude of power. In traditional Jewish theology, there is no afterlife per se. You live on through your children and their children and so forth. That's why it's so important to have children in Jewish families; if you don't, you're not only killing yourself but also all your ancestors.
It might be a good idea to study these things a bit, before commenting on them. The fact that you referred to the Old Testament as the first testament undermines your credibility.

I don't know why people find it hard to believe that there's no life after death. When you step on a spider, do you imagine an invisible spider soul rise up into some spider heaven? People influence the bible which influences the masses. So, there are many interpretations, and there are many versions. The ones that are not adapted and are stilled read cause issues. But it depends on the individual theist. If you want to generalize, I guess it will save the hassle of meeting every theist in the world to check if the bible has made them insane.

But as Tom Pain wrote, God's true revelation is the world itself--only it does not strongly argue for any God similar to that in the bible. Which is why muslims pretend the quran has science in it (it doesn't) and yecs pretend the bible used the word "gravity" (it does NOW!)

@Cihl280777, I've witnessed those types of discussions first-hand. I was stupid enough to take university course called "Theory of Religion". The students in the class are from all different faiths. Sikhs, Muslims, Catholics, Baptists, Hindus, etc. And you know how people are extremely defensive about their beliefs. So once one person expresses an opinion, all hands go up. It's a fight for whose invisible friend is real. I just sit there wishing I had some popcorn while they battle it out.

Pearlists, on the other hand, generally just get frustrated at the maniacal lengths theists will go to to avoid seeing the evidence before them. you definitely won't hear lots of reference to afterlife in the 1st testament. But when you do it will not be to hell. It will be heaven and Sheoul. See the old testament, and the jewish religion, believes in sheoul which is more like hades than hell and has nothing to do with fire and torture. The new testament is where actual hell was invented.
Bring this up to a christian and I guarantee you they will cite you phrases from the old testament and CHANGE WORDS to HELL.

one thing i would like to point out is that the Old Testament is a collection of Jewish texts telling of their history, The Mosaic laws, a few books of wisdom and the Messianic prophecies. Their is a whole plethora of non scriptural texts that teach about the theological beliefs of the of the early jewish people. So you would do well to understand that the Bible is not the only source of theological thought which influence modern Christianity.

The Old Testament has some pretty hideous judgements in it. No doubt about that. However the purpose behind them is not hideous at all. From a general standpoint, it brought about the desire for mercy; the fullfillment of civil and moral law.The Old Covenant was a school master. For those who hold others to the law without mercy, they too will be shown no mercy.

The holy bible contains hundreds of direct contradictions and this is all the proof needed that it cannot all be true. When they wrote the King James version there were thousands of changes made to correct "errors". The Christian church was opposed to education and progress (still is) for centuries until they had no choice but to accept it. They responded by setting up their own education system to make sure people would never learn that they are the source of most problems on the planet.

The thing is, until fairly late on most Christians were Catholic (because they killed the ones who weren't). Only the priests read the Bible, because it was in Latin, and then they preached sermons to the lay people.
They were quite opposed to the first publication of a Bible translated into English because the last thing they wanted was ordinary people reading it and seeing what a croc it was.

@cunnidvd actually references in the OT to the afterlife are ambiguous at best, hence the ongoing lack of consensus of whether traditional Hebrews believed in an afterlife at all. There are some verses that one can infer an afterlife, but some say they are figurative, death meaning separation from god, much like Adam's death in leaving the garden. Whatever their beliefs, they didn't present too prominently in the Old Testament.

If you're looking for good, relatively brief overview, look up Chuck Missler's "Learn the Bible in 24 Hours." If you'd like to find out just how amazing this book is, check out a number of his other presentations such as "Cosmic Codes", "70 Weeks of Daniel," "Prophecy 20/20. Also check out "The Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls" by Peter Flint. It's a grave mistake to discredit this canon without really looking into it.

In traditional Jewish theology, there is no afterlife per se. You live on through your children and their children and so forth. That's why it's so important to have children in Jewish families; if you don't, you're not only killing yourself but also all your ancestors.

Awesome. I had the exact same experience . . . had heard all kinds of nasty things, but was completely unprepared for what I found. You'll never be again be able to keep a straight face when Christians sulk that you're taking things "out of context."
The cool thing is, though the bible contains hours of lethal boredom, it's well worth it. Check out the Sceptic's Annotated bible online, it's awesome. And, you'll become one of the .01% of people who have actually read that ghastly thing.

The Bible doesn't even say that. The Bible says that God chose whom to save at the beginning of time. The universe, by definition, is everything that exists. If God exists, He must be part of the universe. Therefore, He would be subject to His own laws. The fundamental laws of logic cannot be changed or refuted. They are transcendent. However, logic must also be part of the universe. This establishes pantheism, which is a form of atheism.

You should study for yourself too, cause the decreasing of the earth rotation is directly related to the tide and the effect the gravity of the moon and the sun as on the earth. This phenomenom (wich I didn't know about thx to you) as been explained and doesn't have anything to do with the age of the earth, wich is 4.4 billion years old !

I don't know why people find it hard to believe that there's no life after death. When you step on a spider, do you imagine an invisible spider soul rise up into some spider heaven? We're biological beings just like any other animal on earth. To me, it makes perfect sense if someone dies, they are dead. No more brain activity. Lifeless body. The evidence is right there. Why make up something so stupid like an invisible soul that rises someplace, which happens to also be invisible.

Funny how Chrisitans are so defensive when atheists speak up. But they don't find it the LEAST annoying to go preaching to everyone since they feel like it's their "duty". They have no problem telling everyone who doens't worship THEIR GOD that they are going to burn in hell for eternity. Religion is in no way beneficial to society. However, there are two forms of biblical scholarship, traditional theological "scolarship" which mostly studies the book itself and interprets it, and real archeological scholarship that points out its contradictions, political motivations, missing volumns, and so on and so on.

People influence the bible which influences the masses. So, there are many interpretations, and there are many versions. The ones that are not adapted and are stilled read cause issues. But it depends on the individual theist. If you want to generalize, I guess it will save the hassle of meeting every theist in the world to check if the bible has made them insane.

@Drastam If the Bible (or the Quran, or any other) is "The word of God" then one would expect it not to contradict itself, not to contradict reality, and just maybe to contain some useful information about that reality. But as Tom Pain wrote, God's true revelation is the world itself--only it does not strongly argue for any God similar to that in the bible. Which is why muslims pretend the quran has science in it (it doesn't) and yecs pretend the bible used the word "gravity" (it does NOW!)

@Cihl280777, I've witnessed those types of discussions first-hand. I was stupid enough to take university course called "Theory of Religion". The students in the class are from all different faiths. Sikhs, Muslims, Catholics, Baptists, Hindus, etc. And you know how people are extremely defensive about their beliefs. So once one person expresses an opinion, all hands go up. It's a fight for whose invisible friend is real. I just sit there wishing I had some popcorn while they battle it out.

you definitely won't hear lots of reference to afterlife in the 1st testament. But when you do it will not be to hell. It will be heaven and Sheoul. See the old testament, and the jewish religion, believes in sheoul which is more like hades than hell and has nothing to do with fire and torture. The new testament is where actual hell was invented.
Bring this up to a christian and I guarantee you they will cite you phrases from the old testament and CHANGE WORDS to HELL.

one thing i would like to point out is that the Old Testament is a collection of Jewish texts telling of their history, The Mosaic laws, a few books of wisdom and the Messianic prophecies. Their is a whole plethora of non scriptural texts that teach about the theological beliefs of the of the early jewish people. So you would do well to understand that the Bible is not the only source of theological thought which influence modern Christianity.

The Old Testament has some pretty hideous judgements in it. No doubt about that. However the purpose behind them is not hideous at all. From a general standpoint, it brought about the desire for mercy; the fullfillment of civil and moral law.The Old Covenant was a school master.
