wraith3845, it's ok you can get really close to most barracuda once you do nothing to startle them. the photographer getting that close should not have been a problem but obviously he had something on him that attracted it. We spearfish hundreds of barracuda here in Barbados every year and we have to get very close for a good shot ,but most of the time they will run if they see you get too close.

i think this video is very real; Barracuda can move with lightning speed especially if they are attracted by something shining. look closely at the beginning of the video and you will see the fish is a lighter color, then just before he strikes he turns darker. they always turn darker before an attack. you are lucky that you were not seriously streaded up dude. watch what you're wearing is those kind of waters.

I can't believe it. That same thing exactly happened to me a week ago hen I was snorkeling. I was following for several minutes this 1.6 meter barracuda, I was very stupidly close, like 2 meters away from it, when it suddenly turned just like in the video and charged, but it swam centimeters to the side of my face and it disappeared in the distance. It was...scary...xD

I just got back from a vacation in Bermuda and I was snorkeling with my family and I pointed out a very long, slender fish, I thought it was a shark or something so we stayed our distance.
