although John Wayne is my favorite he made a choice not to participate in WW2 like most of the actors in Hollywood. He chose to work on his career while other fought for their country and gave their lives. If WW2 never happened he may not be the icon he is today.
@educatedrock actually he tried to enlist at age 34, but was denied because of an old football injury to his shoulder. he made war movies to show his support for the troops even though he could not be one of them.
@educatedrock also, he would have been known. i grew up watching gis movies he made when he was still in his real early 20s. westerns. he made more western movies than war films..after WWII he also made the "green berets" movie during the vietnam war
This movie was very accurate as far as the fighting was portrayed, many actual scenes were included. My father was a Marine on Iwo Jima and this was one of his favorite movies. Three actual flag raisers played parts in this movie, including Ira Hayes the native American Indian (remember Johnny Cash's song?) who eventually died of exposure and hypothermia back in the states. The battle of Iwo Jima is the most famous Marine Corp battle in history, and the flag raising is immortalized in Washingto
Note the leggins they wore. One of my platoon Sargent's used to refer to the old "brown boot" Army. This was 1974,he was a 30 year"lifer". We wore the black boots, now they wear work boots. That must have been a big loss for the shoe polish companies.
oooora to the usmc and that hem is asome my dad was in the marines well you know what they say once a marine all a marine so oooooooora marine core and when i turn 18 i will be in the UNITED STATES MARINES OOOOOOOOOOOORRRAAAAA
@dgrdsgdrgrgf This is just a movie. War is not about glory and honour. John Wayne knew that and was sensible enough to spend the War making films about war instead of fighting. If I were you Id follow his example. Theres nothing glorious about body bags.
Those who've called me an idiot and a fool here should check out Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 4/11 (free online if you're smart enough to find it), for a good picture of "W" ( who at 1 hour, 38 minutes arrogantly defines his "base") - also the Marine Corp's recruiting tactics and who they attempt to recruit - actually depicted, not talked about. More than 10,000 with minor criminal records have been taken into the military in the last ten years - but no gays who the Marine Corps will now choke on.
Thanks for putting this up! Haven't watched this in years. I always look for it on Veterans Day or USMC Birthday and it's never on. Now I can watch it whenever. As long as it's on here.
Think - If Bush senior hadn't been picked up by a submarine after being shot down off Chichi Jima, Ronnie Reagan would have had a different vice president, Bush senior wouldn't have been president, "W" and Jeff wouldn't exist, so we almost certainly wouldn't be in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the U.S. might even have a positive cash flow in government right now. Seven U.S. crewmen were beheaded on Chichi Jima, most of them after being there awhile. The top two Japanese officers were later executed.
To TheNavyman53, Flyboys was where I got the information on Bush, whose crewmen did bail out and were beheaded and Wayne had a family deferment due to having sired four children. Republic Pictures helped too. The U.S. many years ago planned to use Chichi Jima as a coaling station once they opened up trade with China, since coal-fired ships of that era couldn't go more than about 3500 miles without recoaling. They even purchased acreage off an expat there to justify being able to use the island.
Chichi Jima, about 25 miles west of Iwo Jima, was a relay station for Japanese radio messages during WW II. The American navy bombed it extensively with little result, since it was basically a rock. Anyway, George Bush senior was the pilot of a single-engine bomber with enlisted men, a gunner and a communications specialist sitting behind him. After they were shot down Bush was picked up by a submarine, but his crewmen, who he let bail out first, were captured and decapitated by the Japanese.
@SabraStiehl Actually if you read James Brady's "Fly Boys" GHW Bush's TBM crew went down with the plane. There were several flight crews that parachuted onto Chichi Jima, all of them were executed, most had their livers removed only to be eaten by the Japanese.
While most of his compatriots participated, Wayne opted out of WW II. John Payne, the actor with an almost identical name, was a P-61 crew chief. Jimmy Stewart commanded a B-24 squadron. Most Hollywood cameramen and directors filmed the war and a lot of actors and musicians entertained, many times to sell war bonds. Wayne had the exemption because he had four children. His friends encouraged him to enlist, and he claimed he would but somehow never did.
"They place a AK47 in your hands and tell you, "Kill 3 of the 5 family members of your family now or we will shoot you all in 1 minute." At about the 57:30 mark, a Catholic Chaplain was giving the Last Rites. In real life, he was Father John Abuscevic, a Roman Catholic Priest. I knew him as a Monsignor here in NH, a great man who was thankful to have a part in this movie. When the Director of the movie learned he was a real Priest, he told Father John "I don't need to tell you what to say. You already know the right words!" Nice compliment to a nice Priest.
The government was going to take the marines out of the military, but when this movie was made, their minds were changed. They kept the marines. So, the marines are in action today because of john wayne.
@GaussTruth These may have been better men, but not because of their sexual preference. This may blow your mind, but homosexuality is as old as war, which is pretty old. John Wayne was a classic Hollywood "character", but he was no intellectual. And these movies are funny and entertaining, and have little to do with history, war, or reality in general.
@CrazyBarang B S . Those guys in the military of that era were straight as an arrow. They made sure of it back then. In the first year of that war, it was touch and go. We definitely could have lost that war until our industrial might ginned up. If we had the caliber of personal that they are trying to ingrain into the military today back in the early days of that war, I dare think that we would have lost it. They were better men because they were fighting for principle.
@GaussTruth well, there's no blood test to show sexual preference, so I'll take your word on that one, but what you say about the war is true. That war did for the US military, what Beethoven did for the piano. Also, the principles you speak of. No matter what these old boys did or wanted to do in private, they would never have gotten caught stacking naked prisoners in pyramids for photos. Soldiers will always break rules and behave in ways that aren't the best, but we have reached new lows.
@GaussTruth Please don't underrate 'men of this time.' I am a 'man of this time' with 13 combat decorations including 2 Purple Hearts. The movie is a fine example of Hollywood at it's finest. John Wayne (a fine American) never was in the service. John Agar beat Shirley Temple when they were married. These "real men" in this movie don't show the wear of 72 hours without sleep, 24 hours without food and not taking your boots off for two weeks.
Those men who took Iwo Jima in WW2 were REAL men. Not a fag among them, unlike our current military. If this movie were filmed today, John Stryker would be cast as a homosexual. Guarantee it. I also guarantee you that John Wayne would have turned the part down. He would have said, "That filthy lifestyle has no place in the military", and he would have said it even if it meant he never worked in Hollywood again ... which is pretty much the case nowadays.
@MaryWaterton When the trigger is pulled it doesn't care if it is being pulled by straight, gay, or woman or terrorist. It obeys and kills. There is no such thing as REAL men. Everyone has a bit of gay in them. So far all the wars in history has been fought between REAL men. Maybe the pursuit of peace requires some gay thinking.
@108Dax You could be right, But if that guy in the ditch with you does not trust you. Then all the social engineering in the world is not going to change it. That is how the world works. It may not be fare, just the plain hard facts in life.
@WizzRacing Yes, there is no guarantee of trust. Trust is a flimsy thing, but in battle trust is a lot deeper. In battle you likely have come a long way with your fellow soldiers and assume that anyone in your ditch wants to survive just as much as you do. A gay/lesbian has made up their mind to kill before applying for the army. They go through the same hard core training physically and mentally before being deployed so they do not get special treatment.
@108Dax Its not about training. Its about forcing someone by law to treat everybody the same. It's not going to work in this life time.
You asking people by force to change the way they act. Without regard to race\religion\sexual behavior or preference. Never going to happen because you can't force them to change. It has to be willing or it's not real change. Just I will put up with it, because the law says so is not enough.
It's like a thief steals, not because he stole. It's in his heart.
@WizzRacing There will always be people that don't like people based on race/sexual preference/religion/nationalism. The only thing the law can do is punish intolerance. Acceptance, on the other hand, for a specific race/sexual preference/religion/nationalism is part of the environment you are brought up in. People can learn to accept through hard work.
My actual point was that in the heat of battle, trust comes a lot easier between fellow soldiers since they have no choice.
@WizzRacing Ran out of space.. A lot of people steal because they do not have another choice. Imagine you have a wife with 2 children. Bank came to take your home and you are living in a shelter or on the street. Your responsibility as father is to care for your family and you cannot get any job. Stealing to survive is what you have to do. Screw morals, religious beliefs and all objections. Your family needs to eat right now. There is no black or white. Everything is relative.
@108Dax I did not say stealing. I said a "Thief" steals because its in his heart, not because he stole something.
There is black and white. Morals are built on that and without them people do as they please or feel, with no regard as to whom they may hurt or offend. It's the same with situational ethics, which stinks to high heavens! It's a way for people to justify just about anything they want, to get what they want. Like when a child cries till you pay attention to them or they get a toy.
@WizzRacing Situational ethics and morals exist since they are applied relative to the situation. Say that you are 100% against killing anyone. You can your family travel to India (for some odd reason), and militants from Pakistan kidnap you all. They place a AK47 in your hands and tell you, "Kill 3 of the 5 family members of your family now or we will shoot you all in 1 minute. Whoever you spare will have freedom with you". Do you do nothing and all 6 die or kill 3 and 3 are alive?
@108Dax Sir, this is NOT an example of situational ethics! It IS an example of complicit murder or terrorism. Situational ethics is: You work for a tyrannical boss. A very poor character in many ways. He keeps rejecting your promotion recommendations though you deserve it. However, he is willing to consider your promotion if you will 1) Start letting his son see you, and, or see that his son gets promoted under your husband or mate at another firm. You say yes, although it is wrong, for you!
@ferroxian That is basically the same example that I gave. Someone offers a big opportunity wich you really need, but you must choose one of two horrible tasks as a condition. My example is a bigger moral dilemma though since you do or everyone dies. My morals/ethics might say that I don't murder, but in that situation the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few so morals are overridden. Anyway, we are off-topic on the gay soldiers bit. Soldiers will trust proven gays.
@108Dax Respectfully, morals must never be set by circumstance or situation. If you do, as stated in your original post, and kill family members to save other family members, the survivors will Never trust you again! They know what the choices were and they were hard, BUT..In family and the Corp, " We live and die as one", sir. Morals are the guardrails on the voyage of life, they bend, but don't break. They turn as new roads/lives are made. The honour is 2 live & die within their bounds, sir.
@ferroxian Remember that inaction can also break moral values. If I choose not to shoot a few family members then I cause the death of all the family members. So my inaction has caused the deaths of those that could have been saved. Those that are left alive would trust me with their lives since I have already saved theirs once. They might be angry, but not at me, but the terrorists for the situation. Reminds me of the toddler in China that was run over and a lot of ppl did nothing.
@108Dax I know the deference between Murder and killing someone in defense. Any person with common sense would to.
You're subjective idea that would happen is simple stupid. I would like to know how many times that has even happened in real life outside any military theater. Hell i don't think its ever happened!
@WizzRacing So you saying military theaters are not real life? Would it matter if it happened or not in a military environment? The example is to show how morals are subject to circumstances. There is no black or white. People will adjust morals when something else supercedes it in importance. Anyway, I don't think this conversation is going anywhere. This is my last message.
@108Dax Well yes it would make a difference. You put your self there by joining to start with. If you put your body in harms way on purpose. You better be ready to pay the ultimate price with your live.
I don't throw morals aside to make up abstract concepts to fit my needs. That is what is wrong with people now days. They think they have a right to everything everybody else has. You can't justify your motive just because you want something, without earning it!
1:39:15 the man is speaking in hebrew. "shema Yisrael Adonai eloheinu Adonai Ahad" שמע ישראל אדוני אלוהינו אדוני אחד. It means " hear o Israel the Lord your God is one"
My dad was in the Navy medical corps from 1942 to 1962 and served in the Pacific during WWII and in Korea. He never spoke about what he did, and I never knew until after he passed away that he was one of the Navy corpsmen who landed on the beaches with the Marines with nothing but a medical kit. An uncle was a Marine who fought on Iwo Jima and I only found that out when he was very old and was telling somebody about how the "Japs" wounded him there.
These old movies make more sense and more life lessons and way less drama than today's war movies. These actors have way more character and better acting skills.
My dad was a Navy vet having served WW2...he was really strict with us boys..but it paid off when I got into the military. I knew how to follow orders. This was one of my favorite films to watch on saturdays as a kid.
These are the kinds of movies I grew up watching...in the 1950's and 60's these films were shown on saturdays. I guess I would have joined but my dad being a Navy vet wanted me to join the Navy so I did.
There don't seem to be any New Zealanders in the part set in New Zealand, maybe because it was all filmed in California. But who would worry about Adele Mara's accent?
i loved how they handled the repercussions for drinking coffee when his fellow marines deepened on him truly a horrible thing to live with i really liked that greek too. n that was one hell of a bazooka remember marines SADDLE UP
great move from the past when America was America. Not like the shit the communists are producing in hollywood. God Bless America and John Wayne and the United States Marine Corps. Tomorrow belong to me.
Jeff, don't get discouraged. By posting movies like this you keep the legend of The Duke alive. Movies like this show the fighting spirit of the American service man that became the embodyment of John Wayne. Because of you, over sixteen thousand viewers now know about Tarawa and Iwo Jima and the lives it took to capture those two small specks in the Pacific. Movies like this teach us that our freedom did not come free. Keep going buddy, your efforts are not in vain.
If I could go back to when I was 17y/o knowing what I know about myself I would have joined the Marines. I am pretty sure I would because my only sport is racing motorcycles. Road racing. 170mph with a pack of guys leaning in to a turn at the same time. What a rush. In the 6 years I raced at least 2 guys got killed. One day I was walking through the pits and it hit me. Here I am risking my life for a 7$ trophy. How cool would it be to risk my life defending the country? 32 yrs too late.
Thank you for uploading this. My Dad was 17 on Iwo and my Son is a Marine now in artillery school at Ft Sill. Watching this, it made me think of my Dad so much, and what he must have gone through. He lived to be 64 and was always a Marine at heart. I miss him very much.
THANK YOU! John Wayne was, is and always will be a legend! I watched more of his movies growing up than I did Disney movies or cartoons. I don’t believe there is a better way to grow up. =)
@bobbycv64 Right you are, my friend. We may give each other hell but the local at the bar best not try to pick sides. It's sibling rivalry and it's our business and none of anyone else's.
I don't know if anyone knew this but at 1:40:54 those are the REAL Iwo Jima Flag Raisers (from left to right) Cpl. Rene Gagnon; Pm2 John "Doc" Bradley, and Cpl. Ira Hayes. It was unfortunate that the 3 others weren't also portrayed due to staying on Iwo.
This is a great movie. Very nuanced characters for an immediately postwar depiction of WW2. The battle scenes are also pretty good for the 40s. I was born in the 80s and this is one of the greatest war movies.
I think the girl who plays John Agar's wife, the relatively little known Adele Mara with the big dark come-to-bed eyes, must have had the sexiest face in cinema history. Modern actresses have to disrobe completely to produce the same stimulating effect. Apparently she was also a talented singer and dancer. Also of South American descent like Rita Hayworth, she was not a natural blonde, though the colour insisted on by her studio suited her well.
To the soldiers that requested the original True Grit with John Wayne from 1969 , i am sad to inform you that i had to take the video down because i received a copyright infringement notice...
Sorry guys,i will keep looking for old movies that i can post on youtube without the Gestapo burning my PC.
The Catholic Chaplain at about 57 minutes is a personal friend of mine, Father John Abucewich, now a Monsignor. It was nice that they did not have to give him any lines, unlike the protestant chaplain who appeared just before him. When he appeared for the shooting, he was asked if he was a real Priest. When he said "yes", the Director said "Good, We don't have to tell you what to say. You already know the words." Notice that he recited the Last Rites in Latin. Great Priest!
Man, how dumb are the Flynn brothers, still spoiling for a fight even as the landing on Iwo is about the start? And they still want to go at it even when one gets shot near the Jap pillbox.
To SFC Clyde Savage 1st Air Cav Pleiku. A 5'5" man who was a giant with guts of steel and a heart of gold. I just wish that I had been smart enough at the time to appreciate everything you tried to do for me and the others. May your tormented soul rest in peace. Thanks - a grateful ex grunt.
@spacepatrolman We, who were fortunate enough not to have to suffer through that bloody meat grinder in the south pacific, can never adequately express our thanks to those that suffered and sacrificed so much. I was in the Army, but I have only the greatest respect and admiration for the Marines and what they did. Tell your friend Jack that there are those of us out there that will forever remember what the Marines have done in all of our nation's conflicts.
although John Wayne is my favorite he made a choice not to participate in WW2 like most of the actors in Hollywood. He chose to work on his career while other fought for their country and gave their lives. If WW2 never happened he may not be the icon he is today.

If we had the caliber of personal that they are trying to ingrain into the military today back in the early days of that war, I dare think that we would have lost it. They were better men because they were fighting for principle.
GaussTruth 2 months ago
@GaussTruth well, there's no blood test to show sexual preference, so I'll take your word on that one, but what you say about the war is true. That war did for the US military, what Beethoven did for the piano. Also, the principles you speak of. No matter what these old boys did or wanted to do in private, they would never have gotten caught stacking naked prisoners in pyramids for photos. Soldiers will always break rules and behave in ways that aren't the best, but we have reached new lows.
CrazyBarang 2 months ago
@GaussTruth WWII, Korea and Vietnam were wars of ideology, Today it is all about economics and kill off anyone who is bad for business..
jdh91741 2 months ago
@GaussTruth Please don't underrate 'men of this time.' I am a 'man of this time' with 13 combat decorations including 2 Purple Hearts. The movie is a fine example of Hollywood at it's finest. John Wayne (a fine American) never was in the service. John Agar beat Shirley Temple when they were married. These "real men" in this movie don't show the wear of 72 hours without sleep, 24 hours without food and not taking your boots off for two weeks.
jdh91741 2 months ago
Those men who took Iwo Jima in WW2 were REAL men. Not a fag among them, unlike our current military. If this movie were filmed today, John Stryker would be cast as a homosexual. Guarantee it. I also guarantee you that John Wayne would have turned the part down. He would have said, "That filthy lifestyle has no place in the military", and he would have said it even if it meant he never worked in Hollywood again ... which is pretty much the case nowadays.
MaryWaterton 3 months ago
@MaryWaterton All sex is filthy, if you do it right. Gay sex is the same as any, though it doesn't appeal to me, or obviously you either.
CrazyBarang 3 months ago
@MaryWaterton When the trigger is pulled it doesn't care if it is being pulled by straight, gay, or woman or terrorist. It obeys and kills. There is no such thing as REAL men. Everyone has a bit of gay in them. So far all the wars in history has been fought between REAL men. Maybe the pursuit of peace requires some gay thinking.
108Dax 2 months ago
@108Dax You could be right, But if that guy in the ditch with you does not trust you. Then all the social engineering in the world is not going to change it. That is how the world works. It may not be fare, just the plain hard facts in life.
WizzRacing 2 months ago
@WizzRacing Yes, there is no guarantee of trust. Trust is a flimsy thing, but in battle trust is a lot deeper. In battle you likely have come a long way with your fellow soldiers and assume that anyone in your ditch wants to survive just as much as you do. A gay/lesbian has made up their mind to kill before applying for the army. They go through the same hard core training physically and mentally before being deployed so they do not get special treatment.
108Dax 2 months ago
@108Dax Its not about training. Its about forcing someone by law to treat everybody the same. It's not going to work in this life time.
You asking people by force to change the way they act. Without regard to race\religion\sexual behavior or preference. Never going to happen because you can't force them to change. It has to be willing or it's not real change. Just I will put up with it, because the law says so is not enough.
It's like a thief steals, not because he stole. It's in his heart.
WizzRacing 2 months ago
@WizzRacing There will always be people that don't like people based on race/sexual preference/religion/nationalism. The only thing the law can do is punish intolerance. Acceptance, on the other hand, for a specific race/sexual preference/religion/nationalism is part of the environment you are brought up in. People can learn to accept through hard work.
My actual point was that in the heat of battle, trust comes a lot easier between fellow soldiers since they have no choice.
108Dax 2 months ago
@WizzRacing Ran out of space.. A lot of people steal because they do not have another choice. Imagine you have a wife with 2 children. Bank came to take your home and you are living in a shelter or on the street. Your responsibility as father is to care for your family and you cannot get any job. Stealing to survive is what you have to do. Screw morals, religious beliefs and all objections. Your family needs to eat right now. There is no black or white. Everything is relative.
108Dax 2 months ago
@108Dax I did not say stealing. I said a "Thief" steals because its in his heart, not because he stole something.
There is black and white. Morals are built on that and without them people do as they please or feel, with no regard as to whom they may hurt or offend. It's the same with situational ethics, which stinks to high heavens! It's a way for people to justify just about anything they want, to get what they want. Like when a child cries till you pay attention to them or they get a toy.
WizzRacing 2 months ago
@WizzRacing Situational ethics and morals exist since they are applied relative to the situation. Say that you are 100% against killing anyone. You can your family travel to India (for some odd reason), and militants from Pakistan kidnap you all. They place a AK47 in your hands and tell you, "Kill 3 of the 5 family members of your family now or we will shoot you all in 1 minute. Whoever you spare will have freedom with you". Do you do nothing and all 6 die or kill 3 and 3 are alive?
108Dax 2 months ago
@108Dax You can always take the chance of spinning around with the loaded AK47 in your hands and taking out as many of them as possible.
steveleadbeater 1 month ago
@108Dax Sir, this is NOT an example of situational ethics! It IS an example of complicit murder or terrorism. Situational ethics is: You work for a tyrannical boss. A very poor character in many ways. He keeps rejecting your promotion recommendations though you deserve it. However, he is willing to consider your promotion if you will 1) Start letting his son see you, and, or see that his son gets promoted under your husband or mate at another firm. You say yes, although it is wrong, for you!
ferroxian 1 month ago
@ferroxian That is basically the same example that I gave. Someone offers a big opportunity wich you really need, but you must choose one of two horrible tasks as a condition. My example is a bigger moral dilemma though since you do or everyone dies. My morals/ethics might say that I don't murder, but in that situation the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few so morals are overridden. Anyway, we are off-topic on the gay soldiers bit. Soldiers will trust proven gays.
108Dax 1 month ago
@108Dax Respectfully, morals must never be set by circumstance or situation. If you do, as stated in your original post, and kill family members to save other family members, the survivors will Never trust you again! They know what the choices were and they were hard, BUT..In family and the Corp, " We live and die as one", sir. Morals are the guardrails on the voyage of life, they bend, but don't break. They turn as new roads/lives are made. The honour is 2 live & die within their bounds, sir.
ferroxian 1 month ago
@ferroxian Remember that inaction can also break moral values. If I choose not to shoot a few family members then I cause the death of all the family members. So my inaction has caused the deaths of those that could have been saved. Those that are left alive would trust me with their lives since I have already saved theirs once. They might be angry, but not at me, but the terrorists for the situation. Reminds me of the toddler in China that was run over and a lot of ppl did nothing.
108Dax 1 month ago
@108Dax I know the deference between Murder and killing someone in defense. Any person with common sense would to.
You're subjective idea that would happen is simple stupid. I would like to know how many times that has even happened in real life outside any military theater. Hell i don't think its ever happened!
WizzRacing 1 month ago
@WizzRacing So you saying military theaters are not real life? Would it matter if it happened or not in a military environment? The example is to show how morals are subject to circumstances. There is no black or white. People will adjust morals when something else supercedes it in importance. Anyway, I don't think this conversation is going anywhere. This is my last message.
108Dax 1 month ago
@108Dax Well yes it would make a difference. You put your self there by joining to start with. If you put your body in harms way on purpose. You better be ready to pay the ultimate price with your live.
I don't throw morals aside to make up abstract concepts to fit my needs. That is what is wrong with people now days. They think they have a right to everything everybody else has. You can't justify your motive just because you want something, without earning it!

The Tarawa beach landing scene was incredibly well re-enacted with excellent special effects and staging for its day.
