  • I really hate when people ask this question, but I have to after watching this video. What is the name of the song(s) that is playing? Thanks

  • It's great that people are getting enthusiastic about aikido, but I think we really should cut down on those claims that one martial art is the best: as Huo Yuanjia once said (or so I'm led to believe), no style is superior, the practitioners might have different levels. On a much more humble scale, my sensei tells me all the time that "everything is connected" (in martial arts). Anyway, inspirational video!

  • It is the best self defense technique when you know, as I can see in this kind of videos, that your "attackers" won´t attack you.

  • Except for that Aikido isn't (supposed to be)self defense, the video was good.

  • it is for self defense. it's actually used to defend yourself while causing the opponent as little harm as possible. as opposed to other martial arts which can cripple opponents. aikido can injure your foes as well, but in theory you shouldn't look to harm anyone. peace.

  • Basis of self defense is to get into the position of an opponent. In the philosophy of Aikido you never step into that position. You never give input and you never "take" anything, no interaction.

You simply control the situation by being above it.

Maybe you want to do some more research on that. Ueshiba describes that very beautifully in some of his books.

  • i've read his teachings. i'm a student of his art. i've done my research and my practice. maybe you should do more research and drop the snark attitude.

  • Well then I guess we simply have different impressions of the art. Maybe even due to a difference in style/teacher.

The intent of an Aikidoka should not be self defense/to defend himself. If you know the teachings you should be well aware of that.

The intent should at all times be Ai. The means are Ki. That should be his Do.

That is the difference to Aikijutsu.

Of course that applies to those who have "mastered" the art. (Even though it is an endless Do.)

  • @FinalKenny2 OK I see what you're saying. I haven't by any means mastered it. I've only been at it a short time.

  • Me neither. I just tend to point that out (maybe a little eagerly) since my shihan is concerned with the philosophy and the tradition of Aikido.

Otherwise you tend to learn it "wrong". Of course we can't use it that way yet, but it still should at least be our mental state.

He was a direct disciple of Kobayashi-sensei.

That is probably where it comes from.

I'm sorry for seeming arrogant or snark. Wasn't my intention.

  • don't sweat it. AIKIDO!

  • O~su!

  • I practice Aikido. Good promtional video; way to pump up the testosterone. I especially like the addition of "most" effective self defense. Watever, even Aikido needs some occasional coolness.

  • looks absolutely amazing

  • kool video!!

  • liked this video... and about the discussions around aïkido, I'll say that everyone practise it in a way which makes him happy... it's not that important to define aïkido as a self defense practice or a more spiritual martial art, that doesn't matter... everyone has his special idea of aïkido, the best is, as the video says, go into a dojo near you and try it !

  • Aikido has effective self-defense principles, but the way it is taught, it is not effective self-defense for many.

Neither is Judo and neither is BJJ, by the way. Doing basic Judo throws can get you stabbed in the process, and BJJ shoots to create the most horrible situation from the start.

Self-defense is an art of its own, and teaching it means teaching self-defense principles FIRST, and then augmenting it ONLY with contextually-applicable techniques from the art you're most proficient in.

  • I do judo and i think you should not try to generalize about a martial art like that. In judo there are actually self defense techniques as well, you wouldnt throw someone if you know they got the knife and most techniques are done fast enough and dont allow the person to use the knife. go watch some olympic judo and just imagine how a regular person would react to that kind of speed of a throw. I use my judo at martial arts club and no one knows how to deal with it at all.

  • MutenKami: thank you for making my point. This is how. You just assumed that you would "know" whether the attacker has a knife. That's not how things happen in reality.

People don't square off and show off their weapons. You don't know if they are armed until you feel a "punch" and then discover that you're bleeding out.

So I WILL generalize, because my generalizations are correct. Martial arts cross roads with self-defense, but self-defense is a separate art, one that needs to be studied.

  • By the way, I didn't say that Judo doesn't have techniques applicable to self-defense. You need to read more carefully, and read my first post ENTIRELY, in order to see my point.

  • @shihonage

Well said. Now go visit a school of Krav Maga.

  • @Death: I already have.

  • HURRAY FOR O SENSEI!!!!!

  • For those who are deep inside martial arts, they should know that Wing Chun > All.

  • Awesome!! :D

  • Why in Aikido we hasnt i realy fight but always demonstration?

I practise aikido since 4 Years but i still not appriciate that any realy fiht of it appear in youtube. Aikido is strong but difficult to apply it in real fight Like in MMA.

I love Aikido, but i view that the most practible Martial art in the Realy life is Judo.

  • Yes you're right Judo is the most practble. But, as Judo, Aikido too comes from Budo. Be patient, and when you progress enough, you'll see that the use of techniques are not as they seemed :) In real life, they are shorter, effective and more powerful. That's why you learn aikido all your life :) All the best mate

  • Muito bom esse vídeo... gostei mesmo, muito bem feito... parabéns pra quem fez o vídeo....

  • so this film is a hodge podge of youtube clips to intense music?

  • LOVE ITT!

  • Not to be mean or anything, but this video is pretty cheesy.

  • En Aikido il n y a pas de combat, parcequ il finit au moment ou il commence

  • 1:17 that a bad ass move

  • your question is confusing in its ignorance.

  • 1:34 is hapkido

  • it's kotegaeshi, so... how can you tell it's hapkido? ;) (i know, gi and stuff but hey, it's a technique used by many martial arts).

Btw, both aikido and Hapkido came from the same ancestor : daito ryu jujutsu. No wonder there are some simislar / the same moves :)

  • hapkido is korean aikido :P

  • Hapkido-kas are men who seek fight and violence, aikido is the contrary and when you KNOW aïkido, you cant be defeated! whithout muscles Hapkido is nothing

  • Cant be defeated??? Aikido is a shit against mma or muay thai! Nothing of that in the video would happen in a real fight. i never saw someone attacking like that.

  • I don't think Aikido is "invincible" or worthless. Aikido is an internal martial art and as such, techniques are designed as well a possible to teach you about balance, Ki, and non-resistance. By themselves, standard Aikido techinques are pretty ineffective. But after truly deidicated trainning, you begin to understand the art well enough to do it spontaineously, and then anything CAN become Aikido. We practice constantly to develop this freedom, which is central to all martial arts.

  • Well you should have some streetfights with different people to understand how it works there. Noone waits until he punches or stand in a perfect position. The only thing that mostly works is a punch in the face or in the stomach.

  • at :28 is that steven seagal!?

  • yes

  • AWESOME!

  • yep, he's 7th dan black belt.

  • What constitutes a good teacher?

  • aikido is good if all your opponent want is to hug you

  • What do you look for in aikido dojos if you want to join?

  • As with all martial arts, look for a good teacher.

  • damn that guy with jo dude i haven't seen anythink like that and i train aikido for a while.

  • nice vid respekt

  • magnificent

  • haha nice vid but the last scene wasn´t aikido

  • im training karate kyokushinkau, but i gotta say, that aikido rocks. id like to train that if i had some time

  • Hi waaluss!

I train aikido aikikai..but must say it is a rare situation someone training karate or any other martial art is complimenting aikido..thank You!..and try to practice! wormly encourage !..aikido gives a lot coordination, timing and flexibility!! can be a very useful complete for other "kick-punch" arts, in my opinion.

  • im gonna start train aikido in few weeks xD cant wait

  • Hi waaluss..and how is Your aikido training?

  • ive got a mature exam in the end of the april, so i dont have time ringht now, but im gonna start after that. cheers!

  • @waaluss I say the same thing about Kyokushin Karate. But, there's place that actually teaches it where I am, so Boxing and Aikido take its place at the moment.

  • yoshinkan aikido, thats what you want

  • Useless comment.

  • That is exactly what i tought to answer that comment. Good job

  • But he's right ;)

  • Could you copypaste the comment I've replied to? I cant find it. Thanks

  • don't think that the black suited guys were aikido dudes :) otherwise fun to watch video :)

  • pimpolipom# the last clip is Hapkido. Hapkido is Aikido based, so in a way it is Aikido, in another way it isnt! Sory! Im very bad to english!

  • weird, i thought hapkido was a korean art? Aikido is japanise? But still I don't claim that you are wrong. :)

  • Hapkido is a korean art as it was founded there. As far as I know it was created by someone who knew Taekwondo of some other striking art from korean and went to Japan learn Judo or JuJutsu and blended them together with his current art and added some more of his own stuf then Hapkido was born. Thats just what I've heard and read.

  • Hapkido is the Korean version of Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu. It is much harder than most aikido styles (probably about the same as Yoshinken though)

  • Hapkido is created by Ji Han Jae. Grandmaster Ji

learned Yawara-ryu(aiki-jujutsu) from Choi Yong Sool ( aikido's founder learned from Choi too) when Ji was 13years old.

After 5 years Ji Han Jae added Yawara-ryu and Taolish metod that Ji learned from munks.

In 1959 Ji Han Jae gave Hap Ki Do name for this style. After 1984 Grandmaster Ji Added Ki-energy's process for hapkido and gave name Sin Moo Hapkido.

  • Yearh! Hapkido is from Korea! But many of the things you learn is the same, as Aikido!

  • Dear Belliisan i must remeber you that aikido is not a sport but a martial art. You put aikido and football at the same level. This is worng. Aikido is different and this distinction makes it unique. Remember it :)

  • sorry but i think that anything worth to learn and do it have to be fun or enjoyfull, so i don´t see any grong to put aikido and reading and football in to the same level. just another point of view-

  • I agree with you. U are right=)

  • I come from Belgium and i do aikido

    It's fantasique !!

    I'm orange

It's the most effective sport that i do ^^

    10/10

  • hey great i´m from mexico and im too orange jeje thats great, let´s continue training

  • excellent !

  • im in aikido right now it is very affective i can take like 3-4 of my friends at a time. were just messing around. ive never used it in a fight yet though. although ive been in karate and tae kwon do to. and im only 15.

  • Is it Fun to learn Aikido? I thought about learning it... Do you think I should do it?

  • Go watch two or three classes. If you still have an interest, join. Do it for at least a year, ask lots of questions, if they can't answer them find someone that can.

  • What do you mean with classes?...

  • Training sessions.

  • Oh sorry...

I thought that there are diferrent kinds of aikido...

  • Oh there are :) Have a look at as many different dojo as you can.

  • I think I should inform myself about aikido...

    Thanks for your advice!

  • yes there are different kinds of aikido. Aikido yoseikan of Muchizuki sensei is the most effective style.

  • To what effect does it exceed, and which alternatives does it exceed?

  • Yoseikan Aikido includes basics and fundamental kata from karate to make sure that the attacker is as effective and sincere in attack. Yoseikan Aikido includes a lot of judo Techniques too

  • If you training it intensive it's get more fun for you. I'm training it, it is specially the best at the AI KI DO camps.

  • Why? is it boring in the beginning?

  • No, of course not! It's just getting better cuse you understand it ;].

  • is not boring in the beginingits just harder because u go threw a stage were every thing is hard becasue you haven't developed much skills yet so it is not as fun but it is very fun later on and useful

  • I found when i started, at first i was learning really quickly, then after about 6 months it slowed down to the point of me actually thinking about giving up, however i just carried on training through it, apparantly its called the plateau effect and its quite common among martial arts and also many other things like languages

  • try :)

Aikido isnt martial art it is style of life :)

  • Hey Thx for your advices!! I started Aikido last week and you were right: It's lots of fun...

  • aikido osu

  • Dear aikido fans i strongly recommend you to watch the => watch?v=WueyIjt0AUo

He is a sensei from Turkey...

  • this movie is a good one EXEPT FOR THE LAST SCENE!!!!!! to strike when you have your agressor down IS NOT AIKIDO! it flies in the face of O-sensai.

  • You are correct, the last scene is Hapkido

  • euh...no strikes? since when?

without wanting to sound blunt, you may want to reconsider that comment

    watch?v=qQA0rCPXess

    or

    watch?v=IEZWojpNnao ( at +/- 50 sec)

  • ANY AIKIDO IS BETTER THAN NO AIKIDO

  • A "universal aikido" attitude which I truly like & support.

    Well done!!!

  • I would have to agree-pure rubbish. Only its practitioner's disillusioned arrogance match its uselesness-well done Aikido!!!!

  • HAVE U EVER TRAINED AIKIDO???

  • Have you proof all the aikido masters to say that? Have you done aikido to became at this conclusion? Great masters never criticize others martial arts, they say : "that it´s my best way for me, but in the world there give other ways to respect".

Who are you to attack the way from thousand, or maybe million of people?

  • Its excelent video and Aikido is best ;-)

  • I dont get some people nagging about how effective their art is.I personally never have wanted to take martial arts for self defence just to have something to do and be
