If you twist and go sceaming off down the road without any regard for what's going on around you then you're dead right. Sooner or later a car will pull out, you'll have no chance to react and finally see if your race replica helmet and leathers are as good as they look.

If you ride with your eyes peeled, proper road positioning and anticipate the stupid things people do on the road, you've got a very good chance of reacting when someone pulls out.

By their very nature the words crash and safety are kinda incongruous when talking about motorcycles! Try Googling safest motorcycle, a couple of good quotes I came up with.....

(1) The one in the showroom

You may as well ask what is the safest handgun. A motorcycle has two wheels and they go fast - eventually you will fall off - it's the law of SMIDSY.

I've been riding bikes for over 30 years and I haven't seen a "safe" one yet. What makes a bike safe is your attitude and the training that you have right at the start.

Wear good gear. Wear a helmet. Keep your brain connected with your right wrist and then your going to be as safe as your ever going to be.

(2) The bike is the least important thing here. But one with antilock brakes and excellent lighting would be a good start.

Most important is what you wear. Good helmet, gloves, leather jacket with padding, heavy m/c pants and good boots that extend up your calf. Dress like you are going to crash, most people do sooner or later.

Next most important is training: Motorcycle Safety Foundation class (Google it) or IAM (uk). People who care about safety wear the right gear and get training

I note you say dress to crash and not dress to be seen, and I think that's well worded.

I'm one of the ones who thinks that if people will pull out in front of emergency services with 120db sirens and disco lights flashing, no amount of high-vis will help on a bike - but riding as if two wheels make you invisible and dressing fro the crash are by far and away the best way to stay safe without leaving your bike in the garage.

Dang, that aint right. A real person would use the footstands to jump off. My father once crashed with 30 miles an hour into a car, sideways. He walked away unharmed. I'm serious!
