No offense, but his approach to the F in the beginning isn't the greatest. As far as acting, I think I like Terfel's Figaro only because he's a little more reserved and scheming whereas Furlanetto "shows his hand before everyone's finished betting". Both are great singers, though!
I'm Italian and I can say that Furlanetto renders perfectly the mix of irony and determination which is the basis of this piece.
At 2:57 it's unbelievable. When he sings "se vuol ballare, signor Contino", his voice and also his facial expression manage to convey that sense of irony so difficult to find in interpretations of this piece!! then he suddenly breaks it in those powerful "Sì!" which betray the anger that lies below. Fantastic
Yes, scordeteyla, he is very handsome. I think he still is. He often sings in San Diego, where I live. he will sing his firswt Baron Ochs here next year.
I like it very much. Just one thing to add: it's a bass (basso cantabile) role, or a bass-bariton. A bariton can do it, but only if he has an excellent extension.
Furlanetto's technique is perfect, his diction excellent and he is the last one of all those Mozart singers around who knows how to sing recitatives. His cantilena is legendary, his style is brillant and the voice has more beauty than all other famous colleagues of the new generation have. He really is (better to say was because he doesn't sing Mozart anymore) the last great singer of these kind of roles.Hearing Furlanetto singing Mozart was a sweet and wonderful delight for almost 3 decades!!!
I agree. But Terfel still does. And he is an amazing singer too. And also he was born in the mid 60's so at least he still has his youth, "Knock On Wood"
Katherine, i can fully agree with you when you say that his "le insegnero, SI" is too far back in his mouth. Although, if you listen to the last two times he sings that line, it's actually a bit more forward.
I think he takes too much liberty with his vowels. He's a bit mushy in places. If you didn't know the words already, i think you would be hard pressed to write the correct words just by listening to him sing this. He's not bad though. His acting makes up for his extreme vocal liberties.
well, he's italian, he's knows how to pronounce the words, and i didn't understand any italian before i listened to him and sort of learned to understand through him. i can't complain :)
I know what you mean about the mushy diction, but I think that it may have to do with his intention to keep legato line. Singers always have to keep that balance of consonants vs legato line and it's SOOOO hard to find. He makes the perfect Figaro...SO darn CUTE!
I agree, but that's such a minor detail, and every other aspect of this performance is wonderful! He's got a great stage presense and is my favourite Figaro so far. I wish I could see him live at that performance, but back then I had no idea who Mozart was, let alone Furlanetto =)
maestro!!!! qué gran actuación, que gran interpretación!!! que gran cantante que es ferruccio!! un real ícono para los bajos y barítonos!!

Grande Furlanetto!
...For me Furlanetto and Terfel are two great Figaros. Both vocally and EMOTIONALLY: great actors.
Also Ramey, d'Arcangelo are the peaks of vocal mastery.
...Also Raimondi's intrepretation of the text is very good!

Erwin Schrott´s version sucks..he´s just a sell out...bryn terfel does the best job as figaro!
fotzekopp1234 2 years ago
no, Ferruccio Furlanetto or Hanno Müller-Brachmann do the best versions.

Like fine wine, bass singers just get better with age. Tenors start going out of commission in their fifties, Aside from Pavarotti.
LifeJuice90 2 years ago
@LifeJuice90 Alas, some of them go even before then.

Erwin Schrott's Se vuol ballare is better than this.
serenade00007 2 years ago
I beg to differ; Ferruccio Furlanetto's version is better :-)
scordeteyla 2 years ago 5
I think it's unnecessary to compare like this. We need more than one baritone singing Figaro, don't we?
Anyway, if we HAVE to compare, then Erwin Schrott is surely not the one to compete with Furlanetto. ;-)

What a wonderful performance! Furlanetto is a marvellous Figaro. His voice is definitely my favourite male voice - so rich and pure, and unique, also.
So handsome, too! *swoon*

hairy chest? where? looks like he shaved. Figaro was a metrosexual.

well, Terfel is kind of old now, too, when he was born in the mid 60's... already younger singers come after him.
Furlanetto is almost 60 and still has an amazing voice, though.

Furlanetto always has kind of a mush-mouthed delivery (diction-wise), but I could still listen to him all day long. What a great bass-baritone voice.
