Great video! With the Hughes H-1 a close second, the HPV is (in my humble opinion) the most beautiful aircraft ever built. In those days the British made the best aircraft. What happened?

@edj66: Money spent for deterrence of a war is NEVER wasted. If a weapons system is not used, did it fail? Or did it succeed spectacularly in deterring the aggression?
@NickB1967 I do see, and appreciate that point of view. However, I ask you this: If someone was going to nuke us, would you really want to be part of a country that would nuke somewhere else? I think that I would rather be part of a country that wouldn't use nuclear weapons at all, no matter what situation. M.A.D is simply mad.
Valiants and Victors, electric lightning and the Concorde all made in the 50's/60's was it me or do they all look much more futuristic than the 50's/60's ?. And no other nation has perfected such futuristic planes since then. Proud to be British :)
The irony is that the fuel pump from the Blue Steel rocket motor has been reverse engineered and improved for use in the Bloodhound SSC land speed record car. I bet the designers never dreamt their work work be reused in an inspiring and educational project...

One actually flew, just a few weeks ago, by mistake!
During a fast taxi run a communication misunderstanding between the Captain and First Officer meant the latter didn't kill the throttles when he should, and the thing got airborne. Only a few hundred yards but, 3rd May 2009. The last ever flight of a Victor?
Damn shame we can't have one back in the air again alongside the Vulcan!!!!
damn straight, how good would it be to have the victor and the vulcan flying together again, and a lightning now what a sight that would be, just like the BBMF flight there should be a cold war flight, victor, vulcan and lightning.
whats the reason they were called V-bombers..V for vengeance ? :o)
no just kidding I like the Victor and the Vulcan, both served well a long time periode and even made incredible missions possible like the blackbuck during the Falklands war. I question the military use but the logistical and flying challenge was tremendously well managed by the crews...thumbs up for these two..the fate of the Valiant is a sad one though
thx for the update, didnt knew that, I always thought it was the Rockwell Valkyrie but she was six years later than the Victor B.1..thx for the clue...As I said the Victor is one of my favorites.
well vengeance on the argies, apart from the blackbuck raids they never dropped any bombs in anger, they were a nuclear deterrent and must have had some effect as the commies never tried anything
Actually charlieidx he was referring to the speed of the Avro Blue Steel stand off missile NOT the Victor. This was designed to fly at UP TO Mach 3, which is several times the speed of sound. His accent may in your opinion be "ridiculous" but at least he got his facts right.
If you look back, I was correcting another poster who thought he heard "seven", rather than contradicting the newsreel announcer's "several". Hence my dig at the chap's accent.
The wing spa fatigue in the Valient was because it was stressed for high altitude. Vickers also produced a low altidude variant, the B2. The government decided to buy the high altitude version. Garry Powers got shot down in his U2, so the High Altitude Valients were switched to low altitude exercises - in a plane not stressed for low altitude ^_^
There was nothing wrong with the plane or design, it was just abused.
Amazing that some people don't have a sense of humour and have to take everything so seriously! This is a fine example of why Dutch humour is considered the finest in the Benelux region! (Assuming you ARE Dutch?)
actually, me is albanian. why'd you think me is dutch cheesehead? but you are right about chrispacmen, i guess living on a swiss mountain and drinking goat milk all day affects ones sence of humour. oh boy i just love to get them pissed:-)
Blue steel missiles were made by De Haviland. When they reached the target a door opened and the warhead was ejected before detonation, apparently because De Haviland didn't like the idea of nasty nuclear explosions going off inside thier lovely missiles. That's class.
Fancy ! stockpiling all those British Blue Steel missiles at huge cost - and then cancelled, thus dooming the future of the Victor bomber.
The Victor's maker-Handley Page- were soon themselves doomed because they refused to take part in the Goverments forced mergers in the aircraft industry. Their punishment ? No more government contracts. thus - the end of Handley Page.
Thank you for that StarTux. I am old enough to remember those times in the 50's when things were still fying high for the British Aircraft Industry. I was only a kid but I remember the spirited (successful) fight led by Sir Geoffrey de Havilland to stop the proposal of the Attlee government to nationalise the entire industry. Later on D.H. were reluctantly forced to merge with Hawker Siddeley. D.H. last designs were the Trident and D.H.146 jetliners. The D.H. name was removed from both planes.
several hundred thousand pounds!!! god I could buy one. Why didnt we bomb the commies then!!! It would have all been over by now and could have had their gas supply!! only joking chaps
Valiant was an interine plane, it was buit because the other two, Vulcan and Victor were so advanced in their design that british were fearing that both planes became a failure, and because of that, would have been without a strategic bomber
They just bought the wrong Valiant. The B.2 would have been a better choice. Funny thing is the Short Sperrin flew after the Valiant, but could have been in service quicker (1953) because unlike the Valiant, Short built their bomber on production jigs. Even a small number of Sperrins, say 20, would have been worth it.
Holy cow, this is the first time I heard of this Sperrin... and I like it! Dang it seems like its bomb-bay is HUGE! Yep, definately an azzkicker! (I gotta read into this thing more!) Thank you for your post!
valiant, vulcan, victor. three incredible aircraft that were a tribute, and still are, to how great this country was. Until the probs with the valiant wing fatigue reared its ugly head!
If you have Google Earth then type "elvington airfield" into it and you will see a victor near the east end of the run way. Lots of other rare craft are there too!
several hundred thousand pounds, it'd be nice if military weapons like these were still that expensive, then we wouldn't be in so much debt from the war
Fantastic news reel footage - I have never seen this.......Lots of great footage like this was thrown out, thanks for saving it and bringing it to YouTube........more please !

Blue steel missiles were made by De Haviland. When they reached the target a door opened and the warhead was ejected before detonation, apparently because De Haviland didn't like the idea of nasty nuclear explosions going off inside thier lovely missiles. That's class.

Did you know that both actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine were both of the same family as Geoffrey de Havilland of sircraft fame ?

Blue steel's were made by Avro.

Fancy ! stockpiling all those British Blue Steel missiles at huge cost - and then cancelled, thus dooming the future of the Victor bomber.
The Victor's maker-Handley Page- were soon themselves doomed because they refused to take part in the Goverments forced mergers in the aircraft industry. Their punishment ? No more government contracts. thus - the end of Handley Page.

Yes the British govt of the 60's has a great deal to answer for, and indeed some should have had a one way trip to the Tower!

The D.H. name was removed from both planes.

especially the TSR 2 cancellation, that was unforgiveable

several hundred thousand pounds!!! god I could buy one. Why didnt we bomb the commies then!!! It would have all been over by now and could have had their gas supply!! only joking chaps

Those victors and valiants cost several hundred thousand pounds each. That today would only buy a set of raptor wheels. How times have change.

Love the music! so dramatic and typical of that time, also the way people spoke in those days makes me laugh.

Awesome, wish I got to see some of the classic cold war jets flying in service.

The Victor has got to be one of the best looking planes in the universe!
voxadvt30 3 years ago 2
Yes my good man, I am aware of this...
but the sad thing is that I don't know if I would be able to see it while living in the U.S. Hmm maybe our Oshkosh show would have it?

The Victor was a flying hard on, it said I am going to kick your arse without doing anything.
My God we were well ahead of the game.

These were all known as V-bombers!
Actually, Britain screwed up, and ACCIDENTALLY purchased quite a few Valiants, which wasn't the one they wanted.
TripleZ89 4 years ago
Valiant was an interine plane, it was buit because the other two, Vulcan and Victor were so advanced in their design that british were fearing that both planes became a failure, and because of that, would have been without a strategic bomber

Woah... dude, thank you! Learn something every day!
Hey, ever see an Avro Vulcan? I only once got to see it at the SAC museum in Nebraska, and I must say... those Brits made some kickazz planes!
TripleZ89 4 years ago 4
I love Victor (the plane hehe) still now looks even futuristic
tlalotoani 4 years ago 3
HEllz yeah!! Sigh... bring em back!
TripleZ89 4 years ago
I agree, the Victor was the best looking of the three in my opinion and I remember the Vulcan very well indeed from my childhood in Filton, Bristol.
TudorGDavies 3 years ago
They just bought the wrong Valiant. The B.2 would have been a better choice. Funny thing is the Short Sperrin flew after the Valiant, but could have been in service quicker (1953) because unlike the Valiant, Short built their bomber on production jigs. Even a small number of Sperrins, say 20, would have been worth it.
evilintel 3 years ago
Holy cow, this is the first time I heard of this Sperrin... and I like it! Dang it seems like its bomb-bay is HUGE! Yep, definately an azzkicker! (I gotta read into this thing more!) Thank you for your post!

valiant, vulcan, victor. three incredible aircraft that were a tribute, and still are, to how great this country was. Until the probs with the valiant wing fatigue reared its ugly head!
Modernise and reinstate the TSR-2!!!
puresafiforeva 4 years ago
If you have Google Earth then type "elvington airfield" into it and you will see a victor near the east end of the run way. Lots of other rare craft are there too!

several hundred thousand pounds, it'd be nice if military weapons like these were still that expensive, then we wouldn't be in so much debt from the war
