  • i just practiced this lesson and i actually think im learning. im definatly buying that dvd!!

  • you rock!! this has helped me out SO much :) thank you

  • Just got a Djembe and watched about 10 intro/basic rhythms videos on youtube and this is by far the best. The easiest to follow and the most fun to play along with. Also probably the most helpful in the long run.

  • excellent training session.

  • Great! I liked this video lesson so much (very clear and easy to follow even for a beginner like me) that I've just ordered the complete DVD, Jim Donovan's Rythmic Foundation.

  • great videos. you're a great teacher jim, thanks.

  • Absolutely loved this... I'm in the beginner/learning stage of drumming & found this vid very helpful. Now I'm seriously considering getting your dvd. :)

  • first off...that was amazing! it really does help with anything to do with djembe playing (that is, if you're playing along with another instrument or music). when you're playing along, there's almost always something that you can imitate and the Rhythmic Ear Training helps you to notice that and be able to respond to it in some way, form, or fashion before it's too late.

But if i could say one thing of improvement it would be to go just little bit faster just to challenge ourselves.

  • i have fun and learn a lot thx to you

  • Well done, Jim.

  • ...il secondo tempo...comincia a essere complicato!!!

  • (Very) easy like this =)

  • You are a great teacher

  • well, i started playing yesterday and I already know how to play everything my band needs... :))

  • thank you!!

    namaste

  • greaaaaaaaaaaaatt stuufffff

  • CapeCatboat,

That's funny..I live in an apt. So when it's late, I play on MY mousepad too! :)

  • thanks a lot - very good and the 2 screens are very helpfull - keep on posting

  • Hvala , Thanks...

  • Holy CRAP! This is like playing SIMON!

    Remember that?

This was incredibly helpful and hellafun!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow that was fun :)

  • This was good, thanks dude. I laughed when you were like "You-should-be-breathing" with the beat hahahaaa.

  • I just bought my djembe an hour ago, and this has been my first class!,,,A great lesson!!!!

    thanks

  • find out if there is a drum circle or full moon festival, somewere you can play with other people. its the best way to get better skills and the feel for it. practice, practice, practice.

  • Went to my first drum circle on the beach and it was really great! I'm hooked. Just bought a djembe but had no idea how to play it.... Your videos are very informative. I especially like the split screen - showing hand placement. So as not to disturb the rest of the house, I practice on my mouse pad at my desk. LOL. Thanks for the videos!

  • this movie is so helpful! thank you so much!!! i bought my djembe today and i was worried about not being able to find someone to teach me, but as long as you keep uploading these movies i think i'll be just fine :)

  • "You should be breathing!" xDDDDD LOOOL!

Hahaha, Im laughing my ass of now! :D Just bought djembe, and I was so much into repeating what he is doing that I really forgot to breathe! :D

Maan, you are my djembe hero!

  • this guy is a pretty good teacher.. ive been tryin to teach my girl how to play the djembe forever... not a very good teacher i guess. i would like to burn a j with this guy and jam out, he seems pretty cool

  • as a beginner i find this hugely helpful THANK YOU!

  • I agree: an excellent series of videos.

While I have a background in piano and guitar, I was recently inspired to pick up a djembe after watching Tom McCarthy's 'The Visitor', a great movie, with a stellar, sure-to-be-Oscar-nominated performance by reliable character actor Richard Jenkins. I wonder if we'll see a spike in djembe interest when he's nominated?

At any rate, you make this all seem very accessible, and I'll surely be picking up the entire series.

    Best, Chris.

  • Well I don't have a Dejembe, so I used my desk and, if nothing else this was a lot of fun just to do.

  • GREAT VIDEO PLEASE MAKE MORE!!!!!

Great shots with the straight on and the overhead!

    Peace and love

  • thanks a lot Jim really good video i have been playing the djembe for the last 3 months im learning at my school and i fell in love with djembes, i really want to buy one but i want to know if you could give em some advises of what should i get and what price i should be expecting

    thx again =D

  • hahaha the way he nods his head and his hands inbetween drumming makes it look just like jesus's miracle dance on family guy, brilliant!

  • I have to agree, very nice tutorial. A lot of fun. Not as boring as most.

Good job and thanx for inspiring me

  • This is an excellent video, thank you for sharing. I have been rather inactive with my djembe lately, but this was the jumpstart I needed to begin again. Gracias.

  • You're most welcome! Thanks for the kindness.

    Peace, Jim

  • Thanks for making these videos.. it really helps me goin.. I love drumming :D Thanks

  • Hey Jim! Your videos are fantastic! You give us time to play and you humour makes it worth all the while! I went to your website and I'll probably be buying cds and especially your video. Love your style! Oh, and btw, the fact that you look a "bit" like Jonny Depp in this video is just ++++++++++ :)Keep on jammn! Your an inspiration!

  • I love doing it every time!

  • got me on the breathing yet again!

  • wow, this is a really great video, especially for someone who plays by ear. Most of the Dejembe lesson vids I have seen mix a lot of theory into their teachings (which I don't remember much theory from my paino teachings, I usually would wait for the teacher to play something and I would play it back). For someone who doesn't necessarily care for theory and would prefer to use their talent for playing by ear, this is the perfect instructional vid. I will be learning how to play my Djembe now.THX

  • absolutely love the vids. the only ones I've seen so far that give time for you to practice during the vid so you don't have to keep replaying it. Could you please suggest a good store or website to purchase a quality djembe from?

  • Wow that is a cool way to teach someone playing the djembe thx alot. I am going to buy one I think and now your video have convinced me to do.

  • well done again.... like the last vid.... very usefull for beginners.

have posted both to myspace and facebook pages.

    Thanks Jim D.

Blessings and good karma to you.

  • Thanks so much. I appreciate the feedback!

    Peace, Jim

  • hi,

my son does african drumming at school and has just bought one. came today and I am hooked ! your video is really good for anyone even a mum. like your style of teaching thanks

  • It seemed i had a personal teacher whichs is deffinetly amazing. thax a lot, had a great improvement with this little video

  • So glad you like it. Good luck with your playing.

    Peace, Jim

  • the fundamentals of this rhythm training can be applied learning any rhythmic instrument like drum kit and bass guitar as well as djembe. all great

  • I am a bass player, and I agree. I think learning to play my Dejembe will also help with my learning process of playing bass.

  • I agree, the djembe has greatly helped to improve my overall musicality, Good luck!

  • cool

  • I feel like I have not only learned from you, jammed with you, but best of all had a freakin drum drinkin good ol' time!!!! very nice!! hope to get a video response posted soon!

  • Wow...that was fun...I love this video.

And Jim's way to explain is great.Other Djembé lessons here are to rigid...but he's great explaining and in a useful way...

  • hey :)

    that's great... thanks!

do you think you could do another one where you do more of these, but even faster and a bit more complicated? cos this did help me and stuff, but i did find it quite easy... i just want to learn something a bit more complicated and faster. or just a few basic (but not so basic) rhtyhms for playing to songs etc.

    thanks for this though :)

  • grande

  • Had a little trouble keeping it straight near the end, but what a good series of videos that you have posted. I am just learning to play djembe. and am so glad I looked here today! Thanks Jim!
