Nice upload! For me Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich are the greatest composers ever lived - OK, along with Bach, Ravel and Bartók!
(For representing Shostakovich, I'd rather choose one of his darker pieces like symphony No. 5, 6, or 13, or the chello concerto No. 1!)
@echofriendlychannel He lived in what was Russia at the time. His nationality would have been Russian, his ethnicity would be Armenian. He was a Russian citizen, and therefore calling him Russian would not be wholly innaccurate.
@IronViking99 You said before - "Armenia was part of the USSR" [not Russia]. "Russian" was an ethnicity and not a nationality in that state. Armenia was also a part of Ottoman Empire from 1453 to 1829, but that doesn't mean they were Turkish.
@echofriendlychannel I see that you're Lithuanian, so I understand that cultural distinctions are more fundamental in your part of the world. In the U.S. the terms "USSR," "Russia," "Soviet Union," etc. are used interchangeably to describe people from the entire nation. We really are splitting hairs here.
@IronViking99 Yes, we are indeed. But it seems to me you are not a person of average intelligence. I mean, France is not a capital of Europe and there is a country called Hungary.. Why are you putting yourself in the same category?
@IronViking99 You missunderstood me, my friend. I said your IQ is above average. But by saying such things as "In the U.S. the terms "USSR," "Russia," "Soviet Union," etc. are used interchangeably to describe people from the entire nation" you are putting yourself in that low-IQ category. No offence at all. Maybe my not so good English is to blame.
@echofriendlychannel Ah, I see what you meant. Your grammar was slightly confusing. Unfortunately, it is true that many people fail to make the distinction but we are so far removed from Eastern European politics and Russian spheres of influence that most people don't give it a second thought. I say we let sleeping dogs lie and enjoy all these composers for their contributions to the world and I'll be more succint with my cultural knowledge.

Are you serious? The Romantic era is by far the best out of all of them, because you have people like Rachmaninov, Prokofieff, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich!
moussorgsky is my fav. russian composer, and I'm not russian. His operas are just amazing and his songs are equally enthralling. after mussorgsky I'd say Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Stravinsky
The greatest "classical" music traditions are: 1) Austro-German (by far) 2) Italian 3) Russian 4) French. Russia has produced better composers than Italy, but Italy has a much longer tradition with greater variety and innovation.
How are you defining Russian? Many of the "Russian" composers had diverse backgrounds. Rachmaninoff was of Tatar descent. Tchaikovsky was part Ukrainian. Shostakovich was mostly Polish ancestry. Khachaturian was Armenian.
in my opinion dmitri shostakovich was the last great composer who ever lived, i think philipp glass, john williams and so on becomes midgets in classical music history at the best.
it doesnt make any sense to categorize such genius composers according to their nationalities, it is just irrational and primitive! why to be proud because some composers are of the same nationality as myself? what can be my contribution to their talent? nothing!!! this insistence on nationality is just sick. this is their success, music and talent. music has no nationality, nor does genius.
Aaron Copland is my favorite composer, but as a group I think the Russians are probably the best. Their music seems to use folk like melodies, and they have a feel for the times they lived in. I am not musically inclined, but I know what I enjoy hearing. Russian composers move me emotionally more than other groups.
But Aram Khachaturyan was not russian composer, he was Armenian composer, armenian, armenian... Just give attention to his second name, it ends on yan, as all armenian second names. I am armenian, and I am Sirekanyan.
@Browniesisgood They've got the right amount of white privilege and depressingly cold & bitter weather that would enable them to while away into their respective mansions to create these gloriously elaborate beautiful sounds and that kept their passion measured & aligned and as precise as the notes they wrote, free to be as self indulgently, intricatelty anal as they wished. often killed by depression & bitter ungratefulness
Since you know a lot about classical music (I am a huge fan too), I need to ask you about the type of Russian music we all know, but can't put a name to it. It's when a movie is playing, and Russia or the Russians are involved, that deep and grand music starts playing in the minor chords and the choir of deep to moderate male voices are in the background. Do you know what I mean?? And anyone can help!! Please!! I go to Russia next month and I am looking into a lot of Russian classical music!
the second Piece was played by the Portland youth Symphony. God was it intense. :D

Fuck Armenia!

Aaron Copland is my favorite composer, but as a group I think the Russians are probably the best. Their music seems to use folk like melodies, and they have a feel for the times they lived in. I am not musically inclined, but I know what I enjoy hearing. Russian composers move me emotionally more than other groups.

Love it! But where is Taneyev?

But Aram Khachaturyan was not russian composer, he was Armenian composer, armenian, armenian... Just give attention to his second name, it ends on yan, as all armenian second names. I am armenian, and I am Sirekanyan.

It's funny how you see the face with the music you have most definately heard from cartoons or movies before. You know the song but not the name ^^

Russians and Germans are superior when it comes to write music.

@Browniesisgood They've got the right amount of white privilege and depressingly cold & bitter weather that would enable them to while away into their respective mansions to create these gloriously elaborate beautiful sounds and that kept their passion measured & aligned and as precise as the notes they wrote, free to be as self indulgently, intricatelty anal as they wished. often killed by depression & bitter ungratefulness
im not dissing them though
beautiful work, very european

Since you know a lot about classical music (I am a huge fan too), I need to ask you about the type of Russian music we all know, but can't put a name to it. It's when a movie is playing, and Russia or the Russians are involved, that deep and grand music starts playing in the minor chords and the choir of deep to moderate male voices are in the background. Do you know what I mean?? And anyone can help!! Please!! I go to Russia next month and I am looking into a lot of Russian classical music!
