never get one from a pet store- they are endangered and pet store tortoises are wild ones that have been stolen from the wild, and smuggled in packed crates where many of them die; they also often have diseases and are very shy

you can buy a captive bred baby online instead- many people sell them on reptile classified sites like FaunaClassifieds, and that way you'll get a friendly, healthy young tortoise without harming wild ones

@robokira I think getting around people is a good way. But try to make sure people don't make sudden moves above them (which usually scare most small animals). We feed our tortoise mostly wild weeds (dandelion, Sow thistle, Mulberry leaves) during warmer seasons.

I think it's strange sometimes how people can label things like this as animal abuse. The animal should know its own boundaries and what it's capable of. It's not stupid. It's designed to be able to handle these things, otherwise they would not do it. It's not like he forced the animal to come.

Jesus people that ledge is not high enough to break a tortoise shell, tortoise shells arnt thin, they are about 1-5 cm depending on species, and are very hard, a big fall yeah, but if we was an inch longer he could have stepped down.
