Ratatouille is pronounced rat-a-too-EE in English, but it actually sounds like rat-a-tooy in French. Japanese pronunciation often mimics the phonetics of the word in its origin language, so would pronounce it as ra-ta-tooy, but since Japanese doesn't have an ending `y` sound, it's adjusted to be pronounceable to Japanese people to `ra-ta-tu-yu`. Don't know why the English dub mimicked the Japanese pronunciation instead of the available English one though.
This was more a french ingredient. sakai had an advantage in experience and style with bell peppers. if this was a seafood ingredient i think morimoto would of won
@thexev he hasn't tho, i've seen sakai-san lose an octopus battle to challenger ohta before. not the most fair ingredient for a french vs japanese battle.
@thexev maybe it was fair, but one thing i like about sakai-son, is that hes picky with his ingredient! it was like he didnt even care about that battle.. lol yet he's been regarded the best of them all
I think that because of the Japanese respect for elders, I could have predicted that Sakai and Chen would win the first round. It would almost have been offensive if one of the two young chefs were made "King." I wonder who will win the final round....
I've watched these King of Iron Chef episodes several times. I know who wins the final round, whose cuisine reigns supreme. Even with the element of surprise removed after many viewings, these are still my favorite episodes.
I agree that both Chen and Sakai started their matches ahead on points in the minds of the judges, but I also I have no doubt that if Kobe or Morimoto had been able to overwhelmingly impress the judges, AND if Sakai or Chen had faltered at all in their first round matches, either of the younger chefs would have made it to the final round. I don't think the older chefs were given a free pass, but they clearly had an advantage in skill alone.
what really hit me this episode was although michiba was a founder of this show, he still has humility to openly admit that he's learning things from his junior.
that was a tough battle, bell pepper.. so hard to work with in some areas, i loved it sooo much! although i wanted Morimoto-sama to win they are all great! GO CHEN-SAMA! let's beat Sakai-sama. but honestly i gotta say that all iron chefs rock!
thats because it is a totally different recapie, Ratatouille is a more of alayerd pie with eggplant this one seems to be totally different so i would think a different name me thinks
I can see that this might be a logical attempt to understand - but I think they got the name wrong. A lot of stuff on the show seems to get translated to Japanese and then retranslated to English, and messed up. Check out pronouncing of 'homard' lobster and some other things too.
Besides, ratatouille comes in lots of different types, and it does have peppers in traditional variant. Plus Sakai is the French chef!! =p
i think Sakai was the ONLY match for Kinichi in the final competition so I was routing for him. Go Sakai... but now for the final am back to flying my Kinichi flag
You can tell the emotions are high because whoever wins the show is done, and for sure they must have become friends over six years, very sad. I bet they still get together for drinks from time to time since the show ended.
OMG...ratatouille is NOT pronounced ratatou-you it's pronounced ratatou-wee and mille feuille is pronounced meel figh(rhymes with high)...why cant they pronounce it correctly?!
I think you'll find that the correct pronunciation is with a long e sound in both words, i. e., meel foo-ee. They definitely do have difficulty with the translation of the "ille" syllable, though, don't they?
oh...my...god...dat was just breathtaking...wat a battle! In my most humble opinion,i think both deserved to win...Sakai has the edge in technique...but Morimoto has unprecidented creativity & innovation...bell pepper SUSHI!?!? Incredible! Thx Archo~ :)

Judging from the like/dislike bar, I and everyone else agrees that my favorite Chef Sakai wins...

Sakai beat Morimoto 5-0 because Sakai's bell pepper ratatouille is better than Morimoto's bell pepper sushi.

@TimFrith24 but im really curious as to how the bell pepper sushi tastes, looks really creative

Did Sakai beat Morimoto in the 2nd semifinal with a perfect score?
TimFrith24 2 years ago
(It's not my fault if you view this comment as a spoiler, so don't read if you aren't sure.)
Now I get it, So this is where Morimoto joins Iron chef america, right? Unless I'm mistaken...
goofballerist 2 years ago
LOL @ Michiba, 1:14..."Thank you, Iron Chef!" He says it like he's drunk...but if he's had 8 glasses of wine (3:48)...
As for the outcome, it's a classic case of one being really good and the other being even better. If it were me, I would've called a tie.
Oh, and I wish we could just take a picture of the frame at 6:58...that's epic.
