You know, the "Amon Amarth is really just melodeath singing about vikings" is getting old. Really any folk metal is just a version of extreme metal with folk/pagan themes and folk instruments. So if you were to be so up tight about labeling Amon Amarth, then lets go with Windir who are really a black metal band who sing about folkloric subjects, or Wintersun which is also melodic death metal, or Tyr, who don't want to be labeled at all because it causes division.

@TheEpicEnding But let's label Tyr as progressive metal :D Thanks for explaining the whole folk metal deal, you spared me and my keyboard some typing work :) Btw, the guy who mentioned Norther, Norther has no folk influences at all, their music is pretty much melodic death metal from the Finnish melodeath school, and the lyrics are about death mostly, so no reason to mix them with folk-influenced bands like all the bands in the list.

Viking metal is getting way too mainstream. Personally, I only consider viking metal some bands like KAMPFAR, BELENOS, ISENGARD, STORM. Or at least, that's the way true Viking Metal should have evolved, in the vein of raw black metal, not melodic sweddish gothemborg shite like Thyrfing, Amon Amarth, etc-

You know, pagans had their music too, their melodies, instruments, this is what these bands use in their music, and "true black metal" considers them blasphemy, which is just funny. Besides, Belenos aren't really "viking", aren't they, Isengard is a LOTR thing (that's gay by bm standards), and Gothenburg produced a huge number of bands that sing about things that matter too.

There is not much heathenism in their music, actually all of the riffs and musical theory in them come from postchristian era folk music.

@DerAnstifter In my opinion, you should never look towards magazine critics that think they know what the hell they're talking about just because hold the notion that they know what real music is and isn't. Take for example Bathory, back in the 80's many presses and magazines did nothing but ridiculed the band stating that they did not know how to play there own instruments. But look at them know, they are probably one of the most respected black/viking metal band in the underground culture.

Winter Sun was originally a side project of a quality viking metal bend, Ensiferum. (And most of their songs are based of cold and winter, and that is a major part of traditional Scandinavian culture.)

you are right they do have roots from Ensiferum since Jari Mäenpää their ex guitarist and vocalist started Wintersun along side Ensiferum but was forced to leave to clashes of their touring schedule and recording time for Wintersun. since Jari fully formed Wintersun they have been a Finnish melodic death metal band with viking metal roots.

1.) Tyr's album "By The Light of The Northern Star", which includes songs "Hold The Heathen Hammer High", "Trondur i Gotu"' and "Into The Storm", came out in 2009.

2.) Korpiklaani's album "Karkelo"' which includes song "Vodka", was released in 2009 as well.

3.) This video was posted in 2007

Ensiferum labels themselves as "Heroic Folk Metal", so obviously they're not going for the Viking Metal genre. Ensiferum is probably one of the best folk metal bands out there, in my opinion.

The genre "Viking metal" has a distinct symphonic/melodic/folk influenced style. A style that Amon Amarth don't use, they sound almost toally different to every other viking metal band I've ever heard. I personally wouldn't put them in a viking metal list, but that is up for debate. It's just my stance on the matter.
