It's like the intro to the the show, it gives the audience a bit of a sample of the music to come and it's a great way to begin a musical in my opinion!
@StefanoFan27 All operas, ballets, and musicals that I know have an overture. It's an introduction to the production, and it gives a sample of the (main) music that you'll hear. It's also the orchestra's moment to shine before we see the actors/dancers.

It goes back all the way to opera. Operas and Musicals usually have an overture that exposes the main themes of the entire production all at once.

Also, it, and the Entre' Act (spelling bad) are the times when the Orchestra to shine instead of the actors
