Excellent video, thanks! I would say a lick is a short phrase within a solo, or an adornment, whereas a riff is usually the base of a tune repeated, like the dreaded intro to Smoke On The Water for instance:)
You must know me personally cause thats exactly my problem, and I should'nt have that problem because I play the chromatic 64 harmonica what a bummer.
Jason, your one, if not one of the best free lessons online i've ever encountered, man i just cant get it together, but the magic in your ways always gives beginners like me the enthusiasim to keep on harpin, thanks again.
Great lesson. It's cool to see how he makes mistakes too, catches himself, and points it out. It makes the lesson much more effective in my opinion. Never learned more from any other musician than this guy, keep posting videos jason, you're an inspiration!
This has to be the best advice as a new beginner!!!!! I have been looking at different videos, to learn more tech, But thiI have to say is awsome!!! And I'm a Girl who loves Harmonica...
Its my first comment on a harp video! This one really deserves it. These videos are beyond useful(and the non-lesson ones are very inspiring)! Keep up the excellent work.
Mr. Ricci, I've got to agree with everyone else on here; this video was what I needed. I finally got out of my standard cross harp riffs (all two of 'em) and now I'm starting to actually get a feel for the instrument. Thanks again for the amazing show in Sarasota and the kind words. Keep playin', my friend; a soul like yours needs to be heard.
Thanks for sharing J! Can`t wait to see u in Sarasota this coming weekend! Last time I saw u was at Ace`s in Bradenton, Fl. and u weren`t feeling well but still amazed me as well as some veteran harp players. Hope all is well, Dave.
Good stuff. I always find myself playing 4bend right before or after I hit 4draw, almost every time, just reflexively. Same with 6 draw and 6 bend in 3rd pos. Tis well annoying, and a habit I've been trying to shake. So, cheers for the lesson, that should help.
Hi Jason, that is very interesting. We were watching a blues band the other day and my friend suddently asked "Did he just played the same piece again". Even it was a different song.
funny you literally push a button while playing the overblow...
to me as a beginner it is also very useful to switch inspirational styles between chicago/ modern/ pre-war for they all got their technical peculiarities.
I've been trying to break some of my old habits lately, this video helped a lot! thanks for a great one, Jason. The idea of getting used to specific areas of the instrument in different ways makes a lot of sense. Why didn't I think of that?!
I use to have that rut/crutch too Harpo! I would be looking for that shit like it was Heroin before a gig. After a while without it, everything gets back to normal then you don't have to feel dependent on it or anything else.
Good ideas! And great syncopation when you improvise.

Hi Jason
you used to play a Marine Band with Special 20 Coverplates I know.
And you´re a great overblower!
Did you use a other special harmonica with a slide for overblows in this clip? Or do you just playing around with your finger ? 07:00
You´re doing a damn good job here!

uhhh... this might be the dumbest question ever asked about a harmonica but here goes nothing, a "lick" is the equivilant of a "riff" yes?

The process you presented on how to "break the habit" is quite an epiphany to me. Maaaaaan...
