Believe me I know this first hand. At least 75% of patients we take to the ER are non emergent and don't require that service. That's not counting the walk-in's.
ER visits have surged because hospitals have realized that they make more money by eliminating outpatient clinics for routine care and only providing emergency services. This is exactly why we need universal health care, because we SHOULDN'T be using ER services for EVERYTHING. Unfortunately, that is the only way most Americans can get health care because our system sucks so badly.
I'm glad they are getting a handle on this serious matter.
Here in Santa Barbara there's many homeless that get 911 called on them so out goes the fire trucks, police and ambulances due to a overdose or drunken stupor. It's tragic.
