Not sure why they never just filmed the original actors' faces the same positions as their stunt doubles' in these movies. That's what every other movie, including Blade Runner: The Final Cut does...

I think Lucas's original plan was too age Palps alot each film and use it as the backstory as to why he looks like a friggin lizard in 'Jedi', but he decided that the audience should see the 'Jedi' Emperor again in III to come full circle so they had Mace reflect the lightning into his face to give us the look for at least half of the film.
