What a bunch of pretentious wankers the situationists were/are. All life is a continuous ever changing original ecstatic experience if you let it be. You don't need a bunch of middle class ponces to tell you this.
@cauchamar Vaneigem eventually saw them for what they were and as far as I can see after he left the situationalists and was attacked verbally and in written word by them for doing so his writings on a free and self regulating social order are more akin yo anarchy. He saw the light and acted on it.
These people were talentless idiots bereft of skill or concepts of originality and when they could not get their way they turned to incitement of violence.
This video is presenting Situationist International as an artistic movement. This is a great fucking LIE! But of course in the society of spectacle you can always say bullshit with the comfort of saying the truth and distort history the way it can be treated as "an sociologic aproach of a story about some eccentric guys who were making radical art". You should be ashamed of yourselves
just another anglo-american stupidity which claims to appropriate the "french" situationists via one of the biggest charlatans of the world, Malcolm McLaren and the rest.
the serious thing about the situationists seems to be that they really "did" what they were talking about in theory. just try to imagine to live on the streets for only three days, you gonna have some experince. they didn`t divorce theory and practice whatever the results might be. some of them ended up in prison or psychiatry, i think one of them got lost exploring the metro etc.
@cramokramer What utter crap really "did" what they were talking about in theory. just try to imagine to live on the streets for only three days, you gonna have some experience. If they really did put theory into practice they would have been on the streets for LIFE not a paltry 3 days. That's just taking the piss out of people who do that way all their lives those people would laugh at the situationists. Got lost exploring the metro what a tool. Learn to read a map
this is an awful program. i dont feel like it gathers insight into the what makes debord such a vibrant theorist. instead it only looks at its cultural (recuperated) impact. i honestly think that if one is to truly get at the root of debord it is important to consider him as an orthodox marxist theorist analyzing a new stage of capitalist accumulation and theorizing a new form of praxis in order to counter it. the art stuff matters little.
@plutoohno I disagree that Debord could adequately be described as an othrodox Marxist. My reading of Debord is that he follows the theorizing of the idealist tradition and places more emphasis on ideology than the mode of production. He's also a bit more cynical of the potential of the proletariat and does not afford the proletariat much agency. He puts his faith in artists and intellectuals to engage in "conscious raising" because the masses have been pacified by consumner ideology.
even the act of creating youtube content, or uploading a video on youtube, is somehow a form of passive spectatorship. as long as you are sitting at your computer, turned away from lived experience, there will be no "revolution of everyday life." the spectacle re-organized everything. i think that's why debord committed suicide in 1994.
What an excellent series! I think I'm actually beginning to understand what Situationist International was talking about (in a mild sort of way). It sure didn't make any sense when I was reading about it. What do you think they would have made of those "reality" shows on TV, like "I Love New York?"
debord was discussing form not content. it really didnt matter what the content was. if you want to get to know the situationists better i suggest reading lukacs and then familiarizing yrself with the more radical surrealists.
