Every species is the same when eating young. In 6th grade my science teacher had some hamsters and they gave birth to like 8 babies. And we saw the mother eat one of them. The Science teacher said the mothers can sense if they have something wrong with them like a disease or defect of some kind. But when males eat young its usually just cause hes hungry, dosent like the young, or wants to impregnate the mother again.

Male lions will sometimes kill cubs so that the female lion will come in heat again, especially if the cubs are not his. In the wild if the male lion is convinced the cub is his, he will look after it, but I guess they didn't want to take any chances or this is too much of an artificial setting to trust it will accept the cub right out, or perhaps they are waiting until the cub is a little older before slowly introducing it to the male lion.

Aww, so cute. <3 Though the info is wrong; there are no known white lions in the wild (if there are, they are prime targets for illegal poaching), and there are less than 300 in the world- all bred or live in captivity. The albino gene is recessive, so, some zoo's inbreed the cats to get the white coat. This is not always the case, however, as the gene can come out naturally, but it *is* rare.

@idioticlisa Actually there are white lions in the wild. They are native mostly to the Timbavati region near Kruger National Park in South Africa. I'm not sure if any have been spotted recently, but there are certainly carriers out there. I remember Animal Planet filmed a wild male they called "Kito" for a special about rare animals.

Also, the white lion gene is not albino. It's a different recessive gene that causes white or cream pigment fur.
