though ilaiyaraja is a good composer he cannot be termed as the greatest

because he is only able to compose music with a rural backdrop

the rest is mediocre

also the fact that he had literally no competition during his heydays is testimony to that

if he is so great he should be composing music now too

at present he is only composing for malayalam films, and his music for Pazhasiraja was termed as the only drawback in the film

See if he's mediocre and could only compose folk songs, I wonder how did he manage to get a gold medal from trinity for Acoustic guitar at the age of 43 also be the first asian composer to have performed a symphony at Budapest!!! He has acheived so much and still call him mediocre, then that magnitudes the ability of the man in Ilayaraja sir!!! And adding to last point, He won the best music director for BGM for Pazhasiraja!! hail raja Sir!!

as you are saying in your post, everyone's entitled to their opinion

Iam not saying illaiyarajs's not a good composer

but he excels in composing songs with a rural background

even his award for Pazhasiraja may be because of his BGM and not for the songs of that film, which were mediocre
