With mud, there is nothing to "grip" on the surface so you want a tall narrow tire with aggressive self-cleaning tread to dig down to the firm ground below. With sand, you want a wide balloon-like tire with a tight tread so you can float on top of the sand. With sand, you don't want to dig.
