Once, my local ABC affiliate WLNE accidentally aired the ABC-HD test pattern for nearly the entire 11 pm news...no commercial, no news...just test pattern with tone.
That is actually a portion of an ABC High Def test signal, sent out over the network for their stations about four years ago as each station and the network itself began HDTV broadcasts. The full complete test also includes promos for Good Morning America, and the theatrical trailer for "Monsters, Inc."
I can vouch for this. I used to work at an ABC broadcast station and I saw this screen often in our master control center. Just a switching error, I'd imagine.
I see smiley face :) on the corner of the tv

Looks like a test screen that isn't supposed to actually go on air, but obviously did somehow.

It can only be attributable to human error.

That audio was from the Dolby surround demo DVD.

If this were an HD test there would not be a flashing smile and no music there would not be eye illustions

The sound is from a Dolby Digital scene where the helicopter is flying through the city.

Last night on June 28/2010 sunshine coast aus channel of abc randomly started playing the first 5 frames of like 20 ads.
Then it went to a crazy black sort of thing and then to the rainbow high pitch tone error screen thing.
Pretty weird, so many random ads in like 30seconds.

Notice at the end, she said "Stations, have a good day". So, yes, I do believe it was a switching error.

I think this is just a pattern to test their equipment. Must be a human mistake.

It is probably testing software. To measure color, contrast, refresh rates, etc.

@TVNewsRI That can happen when you're not monitoring what's actually on air. Especially with networks, on both ends.
