There are plenty of Chinese girls who are nothing like that, at least in cities like Beijing or Shanghai. What he is describing is China ten years ago. And I find it quite regretful that nerds like him represent foreigners living in China...
The only people who think he's attractive are chinese girls. White girls would see him as normal or nerdy. But what am I saying, white nerds rule China. Who wears a suit like a slimeball like that except white nerds in a country who treat them like kings.
Do not confuse Cultural Difference with Class Division, and vice versa, although sometimes Cultural Difference IS Class Division, and its corollary true too.
@Ilikelink how do u know this frog is not one a in billion? How many can actually manage to speak Chinese? I doubt u for one, can barely manage even spend ur life studying it.
@hxli I am sure that this "frog" is one in a billion, but the point is that Chinese people who grew up in China who speak other languages that well are also very rare. I am not saying the Chinese are worse than others, don't misunderstand me.
this guy is a little full of himself. Not all Chinese girls are like that. More and more girls are just dating to date, at least in Hunan. In general, though, Chinese girls (and guys) take dating more seriously than Westeners. But it's hard to make generalizations about an entire culture. Everbody is different and there are a lot of factors involved, like region, upbringing, individual personality.
I will say most Chinese girls will say this guy is not responsible.
The guy actually has some Beijing accent! Like the use of "light sound", the inflection in sentences, and certain phrases. I wish I could speak English like he does Chinese.
he studied chinese since 1998 (over ten years) and lived in beijing for 5 years, spoke chinese everyday. if you put a monkey in that same environment, he'd be singing in mandarin.
It's not possible to be in a country for three years (at his age) and be fluent and have a perfect accent lol
Some ppl are so judgemental and expect SO much I swear.
Some ppl r in a country for 20 years and still have an accent! And besides, mando and cantonese is hard to get perfect accent wise....but who am I to say? *roll eyes* you obviously can't take anyone else's opinion cept your own.
its pinyin. jeez what is this youtube mass attention seeking fad, just friggin watch. if u dont like, dont watch. if u find ppl ignorant, well i doubt theyre gna leave youtube being more *enlightened* then when they entered. Ppl dont exactly come here to be educated.
So anyway, this is very cool. Wo hen xi huan larr!
maybe I shouldn't be as surprised as I am (since he's lived in China for a number of years apparently), but he seems to have a good understanding of Chinese culture
he fucks up on the tones when he says "bi jiau" . my dads a white guy who speaks mandarin just as well, but without the beijing accent. I always notice the slight discrepancies
in the word "bi jiao", jiao has tone 4 in standard Mandarin, but tone 3 in Beijing dialect. When I lived in Beijing, I used tone 3 as well, because I wanted to sound local.
he fucks up on the tones when he says "bi jiau" . my dads a white guy who speaks mandarin just as well, but without the beijing accent. I always notice the slight discrepancies
whatever dude, when you learn how to speak mandarin when you learn to talk, your parents don't exactly teach you ping ying with it. Its all crappy romanization anyways so who cares what letters one person decided sounded better. The fact is you can't really translate mandarin into english letters.
Actually... it's pinyin (no space)... if you want to be "technical" about it yaokobe. I assume you are of mandarin-speaking decent... Its people like you who almost discouraged me from getting my Ph.D in Mandarin, Korean and Japanese. Everyone is SO critical of people who want to learn the language. You don't have to be mean to people to have a desire to learn the language. There is no ONE way to spell Chinese characters that have been romanized. You shouldn't be so rude to people. Ugh!
Actually, yaokobe is right for saying what he did say. Everyone has "slight discrepancies" when they speak. No one can pronounce every word in a certain language correctly, or with the correct tone.
I studied Mandarin for years and not to sound conceited or stuck up I know that pinyin is spelled without a space. With the romanization of Chinese you have to have "pinyin" spelled together or it disrupts the tonality that it's intended for in Mandarin. Like I said, I have doctoral degrees in Mandarin, Korean, and Japanese. :) Yaokobe was being not only rude to Lanarei but downright ill-informed. That being said, Yakobe was right to correct his spelling with "bi jiao".
lanarei, I think you shouldn't be correcting other people's Chinese when you're living in the US. Most Chinese people who live in the US and speak Chinese have horrible accent.
Luckily, I'm not one of those.. since I grew up entirely in Taiwan! ;) I'm just going to school here. You seem to take this stuff very personally. Are you an American who speaks Chinese? I'm mixed, so my dad is, and he gets really really offended when me and my mom correct him on anything, even though he speaks mandarin really well. Don't be insecure.
No, I am not an American who speaks Chinese. What makes you assume I am American? Just because I know Chinese people who were born in America and can barely speak any Chinese?
Dude. I already told you why I assumed that. I said it was because you took it so personally. Why don't you read more carefully next time? Just what makes you think I was born in America??!! Here you are, criticizing me for assuming things, when you are doing the same. Hypocrite.
Personal views aside, I've gotta admit that Julien's observations are pretty dead-on.
