@paulisemo15 Try doing it when the computer is off first, and use a longer paperclip

@DefconComputers the paper clip only goes in 1/2 an inch then stop and cant go in without alot of pressure

@paulisemo15 That happens on some that are stuck bad, just be sure to do it when it's off. Generally if the drive does'nt open with the button it is time to replace the drive either way, so really nothing to lose.

@zikten It's usually a panel covering it if it's a HP, gateway, or emachine... compaq's as well... Just fold it down like I did in this video, or you might have to take the front panel off to get to it.

@jwdubz22 If the button does not work the only thing you can do is what is show in the video here. Sometimes cleaning the dust out like that can move some back into it causing it to bind, and sometimes manually opening and closing it a few times fixes it.

i have an hp pavilion and there are two cd sections . one is cd-rom with has a small hole one the left and i fixed that one . but the other part which is the hp dvd writer/ cd-writer combo has a hole in the middle and that one won't open even though i put a paper clip through it . what do i do ?

@prchulaj95 Hold the flap down, it has the normal CD drive behind it. It could be one of those stupid ones where they put a custom faceplate on without the hole as well.

@CookyCocoPuff You likely got a netbook and not a laptop as laptops almost always come with a CD drive. Your only work around is to get an external CD/DVD drive. You can find on on newegg for a decent price.

@user12119 I hate slot loaders because of that, there is a reason we went away from them, and their return frightens me. On the plus side some do have override buttons, but very few do.

@DefconComputers I think that people have become more concerned about style these days rather that practicality especially in the laptop market and the only reason I got a laptop rather than a desktop is becuase of school.

My laptops slot load drive has actually started to not read some blank discs which work fine in other drives, although I suspect that has more to do with it being a TSST drive which are notorious for this type of behaviour.

@user12119 I blaime Apple for the return honestly. All of their systems have slot loaders, and everyone wants to be like Apple for the look. But placing look over function causes repair prices to rise as well as product prices.
