  • what is she saying?

  • @PwnToob Sorry to take so long to reply. I've been raising three baby starlings, and had trouble getting them weaned. At last I have some time--they're finally eating on their own. So: she's saying, "It's okay, you're safe," "I think it's time for a little bird to sing," "Gotcha!", and "sweet bird, sweet precious bird," plus various tunes and weird sounds. Try to catch her little whispery voice...

  • @elfperson1 dont worry about it! i love your birds they are lovely (:

  • @PwnToob Thank you thank you!

  • I used to think these were the most annoying thing... Now I think they are incredible!

  • @1234wallawalla I never thought they were annoying, but never paid any attention to them at all. I never noticed how really beautiful they are--those white and copper markings, that lovely iridescence. Now I know they are beautiful, talented, adorable and loveable!

  • ITS FRICKING TALKING TOO! ZOMG O_O AMAZING BIRD YA GOT!

  • @rubiethefiredragon Wild, isn't she? Thanks for the compliment!

  • that was funny as hell! :D

  • @SirFrancisBurton Thank you from me and from Beakie!

  • People need to Keep Supporting this Amazing Creature! Thank you for the follow-up. I think it would help a good deal to promote them on Facebook! I'll do what I can... 0=)

  • @913spiffy She is amazing, isn't she? they all are, I'm sure, and millions of times smarter and more talented than we've thought. I love the idea of promoting starlings--we need Starling Power! Thanks so much!

  • they were IMPORTED UnReal! wOw wee. 0=))

  • @913spiffy yes, and it's not illegal to keep one as a pet because they're considered to be "vermin!"

I should say, though--never adopt a starling unless it is injured or otherwise unable to fend for itself in the wild. it is cruel to take a baby bird from its mother--cruel to both the baby and the mother, just as in humans.

  • I had No Idea Starlings could SPEAK like this! InCredible! UnReal! Thanks so Much for the awareness on this Bird! 0=))

  • @913spiffy We will never look at starlings the same way again! Thanks for watching my phenomenal bird!

  • Did I get "think it's time for bird to sing...gotcha...sweet bird, sweet precious bird"? That's awesome. How does your cat feel about her?

  • @sn81 ]

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' (written by cat) Yes, you did, that's exactly what she's saying! She is totally awesome, thank you. I have two cats, actually, and they were taught from an early age (6 weeks, fresh from the shelter) not to go near the bird or hurt her. They've been amazingly good. They're interested, but restrained, and have never tried to hurt her. I keep an eye on them, though...

Thanks so much for your comments!

  • Cool, he was singing Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.

  • @charlesbunch995 Yes!!!! She is a very cultured bird, and thanks you for appreciating her musicianship.

  • They are amazing! They are also little myna birds, same family. So great mimics! They also create their own repitores.

  • Yes! They do need teachers, and lots of interaction, though, in order to have loads of sounds to mimic. I had a mynah bird growing up--i was very young--but i don't think anybody was spending enough time with him, because he never said very much. I'm always talking and whistling to my Beakie Bird!

  • reply to MadMatt ( where is your comment??): you can't buy them; they're wild birds. However, it's not illegal to bring them home if you find one abandoned or injured: they don't have protected status because they are regarded as vermin! These beautiful, intelligent birds are called vermin because they're not native to America, but were brought over from England and released...you have to be lucky enough to find one to befriend. Don't steal one from the nest, please!

  • Did you know they were originally brought here as pets!! Because they are so smart and charming.

  • I read that they were brought here by an eccentric who wanted to bring birds who were named in Shakespeare's plays.

  • I read that they live 10-20 years in the wild.

  • -melts into pile of love-

She sounds like a colonial fife!! Me and my Kumo (whiteface cockatiel) say "CHEEPY!" to you and your nest.

    =D!,

    <3!

  • @typhoonjax (She sounded more like a fife in the last vid I watched... sorry! ^^; )

    <3.

  • Hi, guys--Beakie and I say "cheepy" back!

  • "I think it's time for the bird to sing"... says that too... amazing!

  • I know--thanks for tuning in to her sweet, funny little voice--she is soooo talented!

She also says "I want to kiss you," " Sweet bird, sweet precious bird," "it's okay, you're safe," "good morning, big Snuski-wuski cat...." she's a phenomenon!

  • I swear I heard her say "Precious bird" at the end!! What an amazing creature! I didn't know starlings could mimic so well! Wow!

  • Nobody has a clue these things talk so well, because they're all over the place and taken for granted as lowly invasive rats. But yeah, if I find a baby starling abandoned or in trouble, it's on. (Last rescue was a sparrow, cutest bird:) )

  • And if you need help or advice raising a starling, i'm available!

  • Why would I need help? I'm on youtube, and everyone on youtube knows more than he other person. :)

Yes, I will be letting you know if I get one, though. :)

  • I'm just offering to help, since i've kept my starling child alive and well for twelve years now...i must (i hope i do) know something!

  • where can you purchase those birds??

On second thought I live in America it MUST be illegal for U.S. Citizens to won one.

  • wow! 12 years! With cats in the house too! The world record I'm told is 19yrs. I know for sure in the wild it's 8-10..

  • frigginjoe: The reason for that isn't just because they're invasive, but because starlings threaten and kill native birds like purple martins.

Don't get me wrong, starlings look like they'd make great pets, but I think they should be kept as pets, not released as rescues. They'll only get shot by people trying to protect purple martins and other native birds.

  • I've never seen a starling kill another bird of any kind. Black birds sometimes do; and they are often mistaken for starlings.

  • dmcenery2: Look up the video "Starling Attack in a Purple Martin Nest."

Again, if you guys rescue starlings, keep them as pets; don't release them. As they're not a species native to the U.S., you can legally do so.

  • Most who adopt a baby find out, they bond 100%, it's a lifetime commitment. Starlings worldwide are declining as a species, pets may be their next niche.

  • "I think it's time for the bird to sing" "gatcha"... starts to whistle a song... amazing

  • thanks--she really is amazing! And so funny. she's trying to say "I think it's time for a little bird to sing," but sometimes doesn't quite get it. The funniest thing is when she's play-fighting, beating up my fingers with her beak, and screaming, "I love you! I love you!" Also, she eats live worms, and before she eats them she says,"it's okay, you're safe!" What a liar.

  • hahaha THE BIRD SAID "GACHA" AND "BIG PRETTY BIRD"

  • yup--good for you for catching her funny little voice!

  • I know there are other starlings on here, and they are all cute, but Beakie seems to have the most personality! I like the way he (she?) says "Now it's time for the bird to sing" in very clipped diction. Funny!

  • Thanks! She is full of personality, isn't she? One of the funniest things she does is when I offer her a handful of wax worms. She looks at them and says, "It's okay, you're safe!" And then she eats them. !!!!! I keep telling her not to lie to her worms, but she never listens.

  • That is the funniest thing I've heard all day! Nice playing by the way, if that is you in concert. Do you do concerts at your home, or did you bring her with you?

  • She lies to the worms!! that's funny!

Vinny won't eat live bugs, but enjoys dead ones, he finds in the alfalfa.

  • How is Beakie doing now? Does he talk even more since the the video was taken?

He is lucky to have such a kind person to love him.

  • Thanks for asking! Beakie (her full name is Beakstein(!))is doing well, thank God. She hurt her leg on Thanksgiving, and kept flopping over to one side, and it was really, really scary. She stayed very still for a day or two, and i'm happy to say she's fully recovered now--amazing little sweetie!

Beak hasn't learned any new words lately, but she combines the things she knows, and composes new tunes with little snatches of this and that. A creative bird!

I will make a new video soon...

  • When Vinny was very little, before real feathers; he would lie down; like a weird little person; scared me; I kept thinking he was dead. My husband says, when he looked in on him; Vinny would eyeball him; and he could tell Vinny was thinking "you're not the one that feeds me"

  • Hi! aww thank you! i gave them lots of kisses as per your request! lol ;o) Two of my sparrows are house sparrows, and the third is a tree sparrow. They definitely did bond with us, and when it was time to let them go, they just stood there and blinked at us. I have seperate cages for each of them because sparrows are pretty territorial, and I leave their doors open all day. They come out to say hello and zoom right back in for snack-time! It would be funny to see them play with Beakie! hehe! xox

  • So your sparrows declined to leave you! What a gift for all of you. I never knew they made good pets. So sweet! Do you have any videos of them? I'm not sure Beakie would play with them, because I don't know if she knows she's a bird. I brought home a lost sparrow once (gave her to a rehabber), and Beak had absolutely no reaction to her at all--it was as if I was showing her a spoon or some other object. She thinks she's a person!

  • He does not like that cat, be very careful.

    Thanks for posting!

  • You're welcome--Beakie was brought up with another cat who was 100% non-predatory. The kitty in the video came to us as a six-week-old kitten, and though she knows she's not supposed to touch Beakie, I monitor them carefully. And when I'm not at home, the kitties stay locked in another (large) room. So far so good--the kitties have been here for five years. Beakie's sitting on my left hand as I'm typing this!

  • i love beakie!!! :O) as for me, i have three sparrows! they are a riot! such little masterminds at work.. i wish people would befriend non-conventional pets more. It's a shame because they have no idea how wonderful they could be! Just like Beakie!! give her a kiss for me! xox

  • Thanks so much!!! I love her too. Once I found a baby sparrow on the street and brought him/her home--she lived with us for a week till I found a rehabber for her--last I heard she was living in a beautiful, enclosed back yard, almost ready for release. I didn't know they could become pets! What kind of sparrows are yours? Did they bond with you? Kisses to them, too.

  • That is wonderful, you are very aware how animals instincts kick in when you least expect it. Your Starling loves you and is lucky to have you.

    Take care!

  • I'm trying to teach her not to lie to her worms, but she's not learning. Thanks for your comments! And hi to your cockatoo from my starling!

  • Oh my god that's so cute..especially with what she says before eating the worms. Hahah! My cockatoo only says "Hello" and "Hi Fang" and "Hey big boy" and "Whatcha doin?"....but mostly she screams very loudly when she wants attention. :) GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • What she's singing is the theme of the first movement of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, the Pastorale. It's her signature tune. I guess I whistled it a lot when she was a baby; she's been singing it all her life. And you're right, I never taught her anything. She just picked it all up. Amazing!

  • LOL I love that song she sings in the first video! It's great that starlings are mimics, so don't really need to teach them much.

  • Very talented indeed!! WOW!

  • she thanks you for your kind compliment!

  • I love the beethoven towards the end!!

  • It's her theme song!

  • Wow, that's a little creepy, it sounds like he's saying "It's not safe" and "Gotcha"

  • She's saying "It's okay, you're safe," and "gotcha" (what I say when I kiss her), and "I think it's time for a little bird to sing," and "sweet bird, sweet precious bird." It is creepy at first, isn't it?

  • you should train it to say "hey kitty-kitty"

    "I thot, I saw a puty cat"

  • thanks for your comments! you know, i don't train her--never tried to teach her anything--she just picks up things I say. the staple of her diet is wax worms, and before she eats them she says, (lying), "It's okay, you're safe!"

  • Beakie is a "precious bird" as she says, but her talking is a little bit scaring. Aren't you afraid of Kitty eating Beakie?

I am not sure, but I think my little starling, Papucci said today his first word "Come here" and I did not wait for the second one, I took off the bedroom. He's been watching a lot of talking starling in youtube these days with me.

Hope to see more videos of Beakie.
