for the stupid. its not compressor surge. comp surge is when the compressor flows more air than the engine can consume. this is extremely bad. the sound here is just air comin back out the comp wheel. it doesnt cause any damage.

some groups of people in australia like the compressor surge they call it a dose and they get special pipes that run from the inlet on the turbo to make different dose noises lol. Youtube search for dose pipe lol

for starters, is it turbo? what you're hearing is the sound of an external wastegate being vented to atmosphere, dumping waste gasses from the turbo. this is illegal in some countries but in most there is a way to get around it. cheers. :]

Sounds like you have a mean compressor surge, and yes when it flutters it is 99.9% most likely a compressor surge.

Why are you people thumbing him down? The fluttery sound when he lefts off the gas (changes gears ) happens because the turbo is still spinning at high speed, making boost, but the throttle body is closed (Off the gas the butterfly closes) as a result, all of the pressure that is coming out of the turbo, is forced back down through the inlet. This wall of air, is flowing the opposite direction of the spinning compressor, stalling or slowing it abruptly. The screamer is...(cont below)

...the sound you hear, starting at about 5k rpm. It is the loud ShhhhHHHHHHHH you hear. That is the sound of exhaust gas being forced out of the back of the external wastegate. This occurs when boost pressure exceeds the wastegate spring tension, which are used to limit the amount of boost pressure going into an engine.

Dont have a figure for price... Gearbox is a s5 turbo box with twin plate clutch and diff was a modified hilux diff with 4.3 lsd centre

Screamer's don't have blow off valves, which is what makes the noise when you change gears/take your foot off the throttle.

Screamer turbo's, (not actually the turbo) rather, screamer pipes, is unexhausted air coming out of your turbo through an open wastegate. There is no blow off sound with screamer pipes, the exhaust goes straight through the engine.

You still run a BOV with a screamer. The screamer pipe lets the exhaust vented by the wastegate to go to atmosphere instead of back into the exhaust.

A BOV is on the charge side of the turbo, going to the TB. It allows boosted air to vent to atmosphere when the butterfly in the TB closes. It's supposed to prevent damaging compressor surge. Sounds to me like that's what the chattering noise you hear in the video is, but I could be wrong, I don't know what BOV he's running.

Its not caused from the wastegate. Its from not using a BOV. If you still run a filter you'll be fine. Search for 'VL DOSE' and youll see heaps of them.

In actual fact research shows that not having a BOV does not cause any damage to the turbo in an application such as mine. Maybe if you were running in excess of 40psi, but not on 14pound. Furthermore, it aids next to nothing in throttle response. A BOV is just a wank factor option ;) more than happy to show you the specs

Its often incorrectly referred to as wastegate flutter. In fact the wastegate can't actually flutter. Its called compressor blade reversion... Whereby the air pressure coming from your closed throttle plate hits the compressor wheel of your turbo

actually it's the air bouncing between the throttle body and the compressor blades of the turbo. Thusly why the sound reverberates so much. Some BOV's sound similar when they create compressor surge from not opening all the way, or fast enough. Generally not healthy for the life of the turbo though. So you sir, are the tard.
