It is true that it is ridiculous that the national leaders of every country know how to speak every language. HOWEVER it definitely shows respect to the foreign country's diplomat, PM, leader etc. to know a few phrases in their native tongue. A simple "hello, nice to met you." Then put the interpreters to work.
