The law has always allowed you to defend your property. The question here is the use of excessive force. An unarmed burglar was running away, so Mr Martin shot him in the back with an unlicensed, sawn off shotgun. Whatever you do, don't drop litter outside this loony's house.

@armours Mr Martin did not knowingly or purposefully shoot anyone in the back. Go to the Wikipedia Discussion for the exonerating rationale based on forensic/medical evidence and uncompromised testimony by Fearon. Mr Martin's trial was in fact a procedural mistrial and his appeal hearing a railroad.
