I am a former journalist who now works in public relations. I was 10 when this movie came out. I am watching it today. It shocking how everything in this movie is still true today. And even worse thanks to the internet, social media, and blogging...
toeg has it wrong.. this clip was the first thing I saw in my media law class.. what is said in the body of the story can be whatever.. if in the media you are deemed absent malice for a public figure.. youre fine.. for a private person you just have to prove negligence.. and slander is spoken.. libel is print
"We may say whatever we like about Mr. Gallagher and he is powerless to do us harm. Democracy is served."
The rest of the story is good, but this part at the end is false. Slander is against the law. It's not easy to prove, but if you do as this clip suggests, you can still be charged for libel and other crimes.
It's too bad, because the rest is very well done, but this zoom in at the end was disingenuous. That wasn't the point of the rest of the clip.
"Football coaches are very safe indeed." So true. The scene with Brimely should be on YouTube somewhere. If necessary, I'll find a way to do it myself.

Great scene and great dialogue.

I was hoping to find the scene with Brimley as well, one of my favorite scenes of all time.
