Thanks. I was chatting, some months ago, to a guy in England called Barry Murphy - who used to set up guitars for Doc years ago. I played this to Barry and he approved of the speed as well. Less is often more... :-) Will
This is the best speed to play it at I think. Everyone plays it too fast to show off that the song is ruined and you cannot hear the true goodness of the song.
Hi. I played one of those Martin XC1T Ellipses the other day and loved it so much I had to order one. Glad to find your vids here demonstrating that axe. I expect delivery tomorrow. Yippee. Love that style of music and making a little progress toward being good at it each day. Cheers.
I sure get into this slower stuff. all these guys are so good that they seem to have to play fast to satisfy themselves. My ears don't work that fast.
I've found, over the years, that slowing things down a tad gives more expression and depth - it also compensates for my old fingers! People tend to take Doc's Guitar at breakneck speed, including Doc (!), but I think the tune comes out more when it's played in a more stately way. Cheers.
You're quite right - I just got used to barring the F over the years - a sign of an aging rock'n roll guitarist...I shall certainly try using the thumb and see if it makes a difference. :-)
One quick comment : on the opening (and closing) sequence of chords, C Am F G7, you could make you life easier in not barring the F chord. I keep the Am fingering with my little finger on low C and thumb on low F; just try it, you'll see ...
I had a crack at this as you suggested - and it certainly works. I have to say that, of the two ways of playing the F, I prefer the barre version on balance - really because I tend to hit the 5th and 1st strings when picking - and they're not covered by the thumb alone. Thanks for the tip though!
WONDERFUL!********
Thank you very much...
Greetings from Petersburg. Have a nice day… :))

It's hard to believe Doc plays this with only one finger and his thumb.

I'm very lucky to have heard Doc Watson play this song.
This is a beautiful rendition of it. You are not trying to sound like him, this is your version and I believe he will smile when he hears it.

I agree with you - at least if one cannot play like Doc Watson. He sounds good at every speed.
Me myself plays it pretty slow as well - and it swings/sounds much better this way to my ears.
Easy going is often the better key for good music, especially if you´re not praticing VERY much (only my 2 cents)

This is my 2nd favorite (of coarse Doc is #1), not because it is so fast, but it is beautiful, and well executed.

I think it needs to be bouncier, like Doc plays it. The G7 picking is out of character with the rest of the tune.
