Tchaikovsky is my favourite composer. Why? Because he's one of the greatest romantics but it doesn't end there. All I need to say is Marche Slav for example, how perfect is that piece of music? 1812, need I mention that? Oh, and let's not forget Swan Lake? Symphony No 4 is what does it for me tho, I love No 5, but the LPO played it too fast in Reading, young conductor I thought so got back to 4, pizicatto sostenuto, how can u beat that? And fate....

@stressedmonkey Oh yes!! and My favorite symphony would have to be this one and have you heard francesca da rimini and hamlet overturw? just phenominal!
@theguyi26 I recognize that type of cough. When I was a kid and every adult was into smoking you would hear that coughing among the adults when in church or at the theater. We use to call it "Smoker's Cough". I suspect that Russia still has a very high smoking rate.
I always found this movement interesting, because it's in 5/4. And to be able to write a beautiful song like this in 5/4 is truly an accomplishment. Not there are no songs in 5/4...but it's rare.
This music is indeed wonderful, Carolynan, but I can't imagine myself dancing around a great ballroom in a beautiful, flowing dress cos I'm a bloke.....
This performance is impeccable, but the audience was quite annoying! At then of the first movement, during the glorious coda with the brass, you could hear some really small kid talking...
And the coughing, I mean, it is cold season, but this is ridiculous.
Again, the orchestra and conductor are superb, though!
i wasnt there but i do agree with you, i live in Baltimore, Maryland. and our symphony did a wonderful job of playing it too. but our conductor is a little overrated..

@stressedmonkey and Capriccio Italien. :) Of his stand alone pieces of work, I don't think there is any with such a glorious midsection.

isn't the middle section supposed to be played slower than the main section? Because I think they're playing the middle section too fast
