In February 1992, with sporadic Russian involvement, the fighting escalated. Georgian authorities claimed Russian generals supplied the Ossetian militias. Most independent observers agreed with that commanders of the Russian Interior Ministry Forces were actually involved in the conflict. Russian officials including the Chairman of the Russian Supreme Soviet, Ruslan Khasbulatov and President Boris Yeltsin made statements supporting the Ossetians.

You are right, they are embarrassed of what bullys they are, like they are of their mother russia. They pick on all the countries over there in the eastern block and they finally got their countries back. russia wants power and thats all they care about. Take away their military and they are nothing but poor.
I see russians as pathetic jealous and arrogant. People hate what they don't understand and they are from a poor country of inbreeds and can't stand the fact they weren't born in the USA.

In the face of inner instability following the military coup against President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, Georgia agreed to the negotiations to avoid the confrontation with Russia. On 24 June 1992, the Head of the State Council of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze and Russian President Boris Yeltsin met to discuss the question of South Ossetia. A ceasefire was agreed upon and on 14 July 1992.

Those sympathetic to Georgia can point out the hypocrisy of Russia brutally suppressing separatism in Chechnya while fostering it in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. But others recall the parallels the Russians continually emphasized over Kosovo with the breakaway regions of the Georgian state that have enjoyed de facto independence since the early 1990s.

Right! where was Georgia on the issue of Chechnya?? Where has been US or EU on that issue they compromised it for Russian support for "war on Terror". Right and wrong, Good Vs. evil?? morality is very selectively and conveniently used by all sides (so lets not be naive).Georgia has an incompetent leadership which miscalculated its importance in the eyes of the west. Russia is very important to the US and EU over Iran issue, to compromise.

The Osetians are originally descendants of the Alans. They became Christians during the early Middle Ages, under Georgian and Byzantine influences. Under Mongol rule, they were pushed out of their homeland south in present-day Republic of Alania (north Caucasus) under Russian rule from 1767.

Another part of Osetians migrated towards and over the Caucasus mountains, to Georgia in the central region of Georgia - Shida Kartli -- Under rule of the Georgian Royal Dynasty Bagrationi. Little part of Osetians also moved to in Western Georgian Kingdom -- Imereti, Rulled by another branch of Bagrationi Dynasty.

In 1801, During the Annexation of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom of Kartli-Kaxeti, Georgian villages populated by Osetians minority (current so called South Osetia) automatically become part of Tiflis (Tbilisi) Gubernia under Imperial Russia, since the territory where they lived was territory of the above mentioned Georgian Kingdom with the capital city in Tbilisi.

Although South Ossetia had its own language (Ossetian), Russian and Georgian were administrative/state languages. At present, Russian is -- the only administrative language used by the separatist government of in Tskhinvali.
In the Soviet time, under the rule of Georgia's government, it enjoyed some degree of autonomy, including to practice (Osetian) language and teach it in schools.

Generally speaking, Georgians and Ossetians have been living in peace with each other except for the episodes in 1918--1920. Both ethnicities have had a high level of interaction and a high rate of intermarriages.

FACT: The South Ossetian "separatist regime" has nothing to do with the South Ossetian people. They are gang of self-appointed thugs who support themselves by violence and extortion. They are no more representative of the Ossetians than the IRA is representative of Catholics in Northern Ireland, who repeatedly cry "Not in Our Name!"

FACT: Russia is bombing civilian targets in Georgia which are nowhere near the conflict zone and have nothing to do with "defending South Ossetians". How do I know? My wife is stranded in a village to the east of the zone, hears the bombs, sees the planes flying over. Younger son was in Batumi until he ran home because the city was bombed. Let us see how many of you who claim Russia has humanitarian motives for its actions will come and get my wife out of that village.

But the point here is we are talking about vision of Abkhazia from where more than 450,000 people have been thrown out from their houses. This is one of the most forgotten and, you know, brutal ethnic cleansings of the end of 20th century. With the help of Russian army, Georgians were bombed. This time, they are again flying over. Last time, Russians were bombing Georgians in Abkhazia for many, many months before these people had to flee the place.

This is basically the most blatant challenge you could give to post-Cold War, in general, to modern European order.
Now what is the motivation? What's the way -- the Russians have been explaining this publicly as well as privately. This is their reaction to NATO expansion plans. This is their reaction to the independence of Kosovo. And this is their reaction to increasing U.S. presence here in the region. Looks like some people have not noticed that the Cold War is over.

But the reality is -- you know, jokes aside, that this is a very worrisome development and that has been taking continuous character. The main point is that Russia no longer supports -- no longer acknowledges jurisdiction of Georgia towards essential part of its own territory. And these kind of things has never happened since -- not only since the end of Cold War, but are unprecedented since the end of Second World War anywhere.
