I want to buy my first telescope, should I get this or the firstscope? On the celestron website it says that the travelscope has a 70 aperture, and the firstscope has a 76 aperture. Will the small change matter?
@Gipseemagic Personally I can't tell any difference in the image brightness but the first scope does show everything upside down and back to front whereas the TravelScope shows things in the correct way which to me puts the TravelScope as the clear leader for a beginner scope, also the fact that it is tripod mounted makes it much better for taking outside, So I give the TravelScope 70 a big thumbs up!
@MrEmperor79 Yes, the number on the celestron site is as I understand the maximum useful magnification possible if you have the right eyepieces, The figures I mention are the magnifications possible with the eyepieces that were supplied, I also use a 4mm eyepiece to gain 100x magnification, hope this helps, dan.
Thanks so much for this review. I just bought one from Amazon this afternoon and it is a very decent first scope. Are there extras I can order for it to help magnify the images I'm getting? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My son and I are total novices.
@DicardedMusic Hello thanks for your great comment, to start with the lenses this comes with are great for general observation and even with 40x magnification you can see the lines of cloud on Jupiter and amazing detail on the moon, I have also got a very low quality 4mm eyepiece which gives you 100x magnification with this scope which even with the eyepiece being of poor quality still gives a great image, a better 4mm can be quite expensive but 100x mag is great for the moon etc....
@DicardedMusic ....continued... Speaking of the moon a moon filter may be helpful to help show more contrast on the different areas of the moons surface, but I wouldn't say either of these things are necessary as the scope is already capable of great views and showing thousands more stars in the night sky than the naked eye can see so there is plenty to see with it right out of the box! Hope that helps, Dan.
Would you recommend this telescope over the Celestron first scope as they are around the same price point and i really want to get into astronomy and want something cheap but decent to start off with thanks
@eyeHowie I would definitely recommend this over the firstscope for a beginner if they are roughly the same price. This one has the advantage of not showing the image upside down and back to front which is very helpful when you are starting out, but in general it is just of a higher quality and I tend to get better clarity using the Travel Scope. The only thing that lets it down is the flimsy tripod. Hope that helps, Dan.
Like the man said the tripod is a bit flimsy, they obviously spent the money on the scope. Gave the tripod to the Mrs to use with her compact camera. I use the tripod that usualy accompanys me on bird watching experditions. For the price its a very good scope. Les
@HDLiam1 If there is no wind then it is ok, but in even a slight breeze it starts to wobble, it is very feeble and I can use my hand to put weight on it and see the legs bend straight away! Very portable though so as long as the weather is nice and calm it should be ok!
@HDLiam1 Thanks! I love this telescope, it has been great for viewing Jupiter over the last few weeks, I like to check up on it throughout the night and see how the moons have canned position. The scope is just so light and compact it is great!
I have owned one of these scopes for just over a year its a good telescope for the price. i brought a better tripod for my one though i trucked the one that came with it away .i have also viewed Jupiter and Saturn with this scope at 140x MAG and the detail was mind blowing this scope performs really well for the price i paid £50 pound for my one off curry's on line.
@smt1988 Excellent, may I ask what eyepiece you used for the 140 magnification, I have a cheap 4mm eyepiece that came with the celestron firstscope that I have used which still gives a decent image, I am very interested to see what higher magnifications look like. Also looking forward to next year when Saturn comes up in the night sky again.
Well, given the price tag of this telescope, I must say I'm impressed, especially about the views of Jupiter you've mentioned, under light polluted skies. The tripod is a bit flimsy alright, but they transfered value to the telescope itself and eyepieces of course, disregarding a bit the tripod quality. It certainly is well suited for travelling, and the backpack is a plus. I imagine the backpack helps a lot when you want to get on your bike and go somewhere with less light pollution.
@AppleColorsBroadcast It is exceptionally light and portable which is absolutely brilliant for someone like me who does not have a car, and the fact that it can be set up within 2 minutes easily makes it a great telescope to have a quick look out of the window with as well!

You say it gives you a magnification of 20 and 40 times? Yet at Celestron website it says it's 165 times magnification.
