  • is using german grip bad?

  • IM FROM QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL

  • 1) LEFT

    2) RIGHT

    3) LEFT AND RIGHT TOGETHER

At any moment in time, a drummer can ONLY do one of those 3 things.

  • @DrumTchr no shit. you only have two hands.

  • @666ChildrenOfBodom6 ... EXACTLY!

  • @DrumTchr Dude! You are a genius!

  • i wish i could watch a video on drumming without hearing about travis barker, jeez

  • HIGHLAND WEDDING! hah thats my solo in my msr for grade 2

  • if i was half as good as he is i would be awesome!

  • I'm also wondering what Travis Barker has to do with this at all...

Is he a Scotch pipe drummer or something?

This is getting a little surreal, dudes.

  • Travis is amazing at what he does no disrespect,Jim Kilpatrick is exceptional at what he does, why compare the two? each to their own i say,my own choice, pipe band drumming as i am taking my second attempt at learning to play snare

  • @trippin5480 Pipe band drumming is more challenging than marching band or other kind of drumming.

  • @sangragganguli aye mate i would say so,it's much more technical and intricate,i'm on my second attempt to learn snare, had a great man to learn from (Joe Logan R.I.P) and being a dumb kid i walked, won't give up now, practice, practice and more practice

  • To take part in an online drumming contest sponsored by Jim Kilpatrick, check out Tyfry.com for information.

  • Jim Kilpatrick can do more on 1 drum than what Travis Barker can do on a whole kit... 'Nuff Said.

  • 1:18 is for single ?!

  • ok lets clear this non-sence as much as i hate Travis, this guy probably(not saying he isent) wont be as good on a kit as Travis but on the inverse Travis cant touch this guy on the snare. 2 different aspects of drumming. get over it its nothing.

  • i think the guy at 1:42 was squeezing a fart out

  • What is with everyone and comparing drummers? Do you really think Jim Kilpatrick wakes up every morning with the mindset "I want to play better than Travis Barker today"? Do you really think any top musicians would be at the level they are now if all they did was compare themselves to others and try to be 'better' than each other?

  • @Amesism Yes, it's called progression. Look up 'cutting' in jazz for only one example albeit local.

  • @idoruZe Comparing yourself with other drummers that you aspire to be like, I would call that progression. Obviously Jim and Travis are completely different drummers from completely different genres. I highly doubt either of them aspire to be like the other. What is the point of comparing something that is so completely different?

  • Why are people talking about Travis Barker on here? Jim Kilpatrick is a boss and pipe snare and Travis Barker is a rock drum set player. Very different fields, so it's kinda weird trying to compare the two. Just saying.

  • this is a premier double snare. i can tell from the placement of the lugs in relation to the tension rods.

  • @osterianio or you can just look at the name on the drum. didn't see the parts of the vid where you can see it, lol

  • You know... I'm not gonna say Travis Barker isn't a good drummer. But people need to stop praising him as if he's the best, CAUSE HE'S NOT!! I mean he can play, but he lacks technique, this guy here has great technique. Speed, Cleanliness, and Technique are all good aspects of what a GOOD drummer is.

  • They are both better drummers than me....

  • wow...............8 people are fucking dumb

  • Travis barker sucks

  • SHUT UP!!! travis barker is better than all of you combined! are you jeaulous of his skills or something?

  • i have just gone to the travis barker clips,(whaaaaaat) barker fans have to be extracting the urine,he will never come close to jk. jk can play more with his big toe than barker will ever know.christ,,,

  • travis barker is nothing compared to this

  • however he doesnt seem to completly focus on getting the same consistent approach that would evoke full even sound quality. For instance, the loose grip, though it creates a good sound would in many ways limit his control to play upstrokes, downstrokes, and full strokes fundamentally the same way every time. This same aspect would influence 2nd note in diddle passages. In my opinion this would in many ways hinder the cleaniness and quality of a snare lines sound.

  • i do think there are a few things that need to be said here, for one this guy seems to be a great percussion and also from what ive heard a real nice guy, also really has a great technique and style to get great expressive and artistic sounds from the drum, very resonant sounds,

  • ScoJo isn't even as good as Jim.. So please just shut your mouth.. :D Or better yet.. stop moving your fingers.. Have a nice day :D

  • Its amazing how a vid like this gets say 140k views, yet vids like that hip hop drumming shit get millions. Makes no sense.

  • Best snare drummer EVER!!!!!!

  • @KC816KC best drummer ever, not just snare ;)

  • @KC816KC agreed.

  • Clorox couldn't make his playing any cleaner. He seems like a chill dude, too.

  • AAARRRGH...anoth JK video. I have hated him ever since I met him and realised that he is not only a virtuoso snare-drummer, but a genuinely pleasant and humble man.

    The b*****d!

  • You know you are dealing with a person with little knowledge of percussive arts when they mention travis barker.

  • who is jim and why is he trying to kill patrick?

    jk

    nice vid, very impressive

  • im a very good friend of kilpatricks and you wouldnt get a greater guy

  • how does he makes that roll choking the sticks? ?

  • Seen him in Amersfoort last year, very cool guy!

  • I met Jim at one his clinics in Cardiff sometime in the 90's. You could not meet a nicer man.

  • lol too the guy below no :P

many are endorsed by andante or pearl

now to the people talking about travis barker why all the hate and lets just admit that they are both great drummers and enjoy.

  • ..are all Scottish drummers endorsed by Premier?

  • cheater

  • yeasy!

  • why is his right hand's grip so loose

  • It's the scottish style of playing. It keeps the sticks on the head as little as possible so the top snares don't get muted.

  • dude - you are an idiot...Travis is nothing compared to him...its not all about speed, it is about skill and technicality as well...and he has forgotten more than Barker will probably ever know...top level pipe band drumming - the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it sucks because i dont think travis knew that him putting up some lame video of him playing would make a lot of people resent him, the only reason why people dont like travis is because stupid idiots are saying hes better than some of the world finest rudimental drummers. travis knows that hes not as good as any of these guys but his stupid fans are the ones that make him look like he thinks he is.

  • @percussivepurcell I agree, go on any youtube videos that display the worlds best rudimental drummers from the pipe band, American rudimental, fifes and drums and swiss drummers and there is always some prick going on about Travis Barker. Travis himself would be embarrased by it all.

  • @Capacity2005 thankyou! i swear i wish people wouldnt say travis sucks and hes horrible and ect. i mean yeah rudiments are not his thing, but doesn't mean he sucks, he makes music that people like and he does what he likes

  • @Roddo08 i am a scottish drummer for my pipe band and not only is jim kilpatrick the best drummer in the world and i totally agree with you on this he is a hero he worked at a mine and he would pay his workers to work for him well he practice on his pad with his sticks lets see travis barker do that travis aint got shit on jim kilpatrick good on ya buddy and all of you who think highly of jim kilpatrick

  • love this. notice he changes from mammy daddy to paradiddle at 1;30?

  • yeah i saw that! that was sweet

  • Kilparick singned my bass drum when i was a kid!

  • speed isn't everything you fucking idiot (to the travis fanboy)

  • He's forgotten more than barker knows, so piss off!

  • thats cause kilpatrick doesn't play the set....

  • thats nice but jim doesnt play set dip shit. jim would fukin burn travis on snare

  • You are truly a dumbass.

  • HOLY SHIT THATS AWESOME!

  • Im scottish and i come from a strong piping background, and Jim is by far one of the best technical players i have ever come across.

look at his achievements, he's won the world solo drumming championships 16 times, and Roddo08 is completely right. pipeband and military snare druming has pioneered so many techniques, and just because its been around for longer than kit playing has, you cant deem it be a pile of crap.

hes a true master of the art.

    eric ward's great too.

  • my self worth, like you have me all figured out and shit. You base that off of complete nothing. I also know that I'm not beyond criticism. Nobody is, NOT EVEN JIM. Therefore, everything I said about Jim is my opinion, and you shouldn't be so "bothered" by it. This will be my last comment to you. We both know that we are just wasting our time on each other, considering that I'm not gonna change my mind about Jim, and neither are you. Don't expect a reply to you're next retarded comment.

  • Growing up in the DCI community, my favorite rudimental snare drummer will probably always be Pat Fitz-Gibbon.

But, Jim Kilpatrick is amazing. A Class act.

  • Jim KILPATRICK - simply an amazing drummer and a bloody good guy to boot!!

  • why does he hold his sticks so retarded? all his "experience" you would think he would look into some technique... guess not

  • Fuck off you ignorant cunt - or I will systematically insert an entire drum kit up your ass - sideways...would probably have room to put alot of other things in there too....have seen your disrespectful comments on this subject....it just shows how much top level pipe band drumming bothers you - better than all the rest. I will give Travis respect, but Jim is alot better and his technique is flawless - most other forms of drumming are rubba dub dud compared...

  • it bothers me cause it sucks and is way over rated. definately no where near better than the rest and honestly i would almost rather watch show style or even top secret shit. This is horse shit. and by your opening statement i can see that all other forms of drumming "bother" you. and i never said anything about travis. hes a terrible drummer, just like Kilpatrick

  • Opinions are like assholes and you definately one of those!! He would eat you alive as a drummer, you petulant cunt!!! It is the most technical drumming on the planet - now get back in your hole, probably your boyfriends...

  • actually its hardly technical at all. its mostly just a bunch of buzz rolls, flam drags, ratamacues, and bad taste in stick flips. You also seem to have an obsession with the word cunt, maybe if you would go fuck yourself then you would know what one of those felt like. have a nice day :)

  • LOL - I am usually rather mild mannered, but arrogant, know it all, dismissive, disrepectful CUNTS like you seem to bring this word to the fore....you have once again demonstrated your ignorance...you have just watched a couple of quick utubes on this fine discipline and seem to know it all...you obviously haven't seen in its purest form at the highest level...those rudiments you described are the tip of the iceburg...put up or shut boy - what is your discipline then??? Unlike you, I have a

  • ha ha i thought the first half of your comment was gonna end with "small penis" or a "vagina". I can also tell that this IS its purest form and its highest level... LAME! And the fact that you call me "ignorant" for responding to your comments, makes you just as "ignorant" for responding to my comments. Do you even think before you type? I will admit, pipe band drumming is a pioneer to many styles of drumming. However, it's old as fuck! And it sounds old as fuck. You would think it would

  • Lol - don't talk yourself up too much sunshine - you really aren't as clever as your ego allows you to believe...of course I can see your little tactics...once again it bothers you - you wouldn't still be wasting your time talking to me if it didn't...You don't like that pipe band drumming at this level is rated very highly by many...there is nothing Jim can't do with a pair of sticks...and he plays ALL manner of drums very well. Your just knocking him, to bolster your own self worth as a

  • You obviously aren't as clever as you believe either then... The word "bothered" seems to have come up a lot in your comments. You believe that I am bothered by your comments, which is why I always comment you back with something "clever". But that's a two way street, maybe you're the one bothered by my comments, so you feel the need to retaliate that way maybe you can beat me or something. Beats me. You're only hurting your own reputation.

  • an appreciation for all drumming and would never bag any form out. Pipe band drumming pioneered a number of techniques and despite your biaised and basless comments - has a great deal of respect from REAL percussionists around the world...If you are a drummer of any sort, then your attitude stinks and your user is just so apt a description for you. If your any man you will reveal what you know of drumming...but I think your just a smart ass pussy, who is a would be if he could be... ;-)

  • revolutionize a little bit in the past 500 years. And if you weren't smart enough to figure out my name, well this account wasn't created for making friends, ok. I definately know a lot more about drumming then you think. I'll post a video soon. :)

  • drummer and if you can get a rise out of fans of proven master, even better. You are going to release a utube are you??? I'll look out for it - if this is TRUE - well done!! Like I said, I am a fan of all drumming, and would only be too happy to watch...and would try to be fair and objective in my own analysis...Do you really think that you are beyond any criticism or people not approving of your style??? I think not. If you were any REAL authority on drumming, you would embrace watching

  • Another Idiotic thing you said was, "there is nothing Jim can't do with a pair of sticks". I hope you didn't literally mean that, cause that would make you the most retarded person on the planet. If he can do everything with a pair of sticks, there is no room for improvement. Any REAL percussionist, as you speak of, would know that there is ALWAYS room for improvement. He also doesn't play all manners of drums. All he is known for is this garbage. And don't tell me I'm knocking him to bolster

  • travis barker is overrated danny carey is a far better drummer than travis barker, go learn something about music. And Jim Kilpatrick is one insane player, dont even compare him to travis, Jim eats players like travis for breakfeast.

  • Travis Barker isn't as good as Jim Kilpatrick Travis Barker is SHIIIIIIIIIITTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kilpatrick would own Travis pal - and if I want any fucking more shit out of you - I'll squeeze your head. It is not all about speed and as far as technicality goes - top level pipe band drummers are on another level compared to the rest. LOL, if you really did think that pipe band drumming was so crap, you wouldn't take the time to try and ride it down. Pipe band drummers are much more technical and plain better - so kiss my ass - and go and watch your rubba dub dub crap instead!!

  • yeah coz travis can do the thing at 1:39.

travis dont know quarter of the things jim knows.

  • go try and learn some rudimental shit....then learn a travis barker snare solo.....then try learning a REAL snare solo. i totally dig travis b but trav doesnt play anything near to this level when it comes to snare drumming

  • lmfao...nice try travis is nowhere near as good as this

  • i'd expect that from someone with the name travisBrulzz :)

  • how do people lead off with their left hand that good when they r doin tricks with the right i mean i cant lead off with my left hand but i can lead off with my right

  • Holy shit you hear that snare?

  • no i heard a bass drum, where did u hear a snare from

  • I said it's A SHAME this fantastic technique has to be governed by a neutered sounding drum. Check out Carl palmer snare demo for another killer snare drum performance w/a dynamic unchoked The British Are coming frightening tone. This sounds like the pansies are coming the pansies are coming. Absolutely no offense to Kilpatrick

or you . When I marched high school 1967 they didn't have these snares. We had Ludwig 12x15 seperate head tension monsters. Sounded ungodly loud like it should

  • dude look at how loose he hold the stick on his right hand!

  • Yes, this tight "German" nonsense is horrible for your hands. I've been critical of teachers teaching it for years and refuse to show "German" to my students.

If Buddy, Tony and... Jim K. ... don't do it, I'd say... DON'T do it.

    ;)

  • Incredible!

  • Jesus tits...

  • this double stroke is best thing i have ever seen. i bether go practice

  • This man is so incredibly good technically I'm spun. It's just ashame we have to hear it on one of these shitty snare drums.

  • but you can hear his technique better with this short sound

  • your ashamed? and tell me what do you call a good snare drum????

    you have to be kidding...

  • When he played pre-dominantly with his first finger and thumb on mama dada, where did the miraculous other hand come from? Was this a magic trick? Love to see the rest of this Vid if there is any, please post it on.

  • This was my first time seeing him play and it wont be the last, I hope there is a lot more to see.

  • I notice the truly great ones ... Alex Duthart Jim Kilpatrick.... they are so modest about their tremendous talent.

  • you hit the nail right on the head man....thats what seperates those two from most of the drummers you see today....they are modest

they don't have huge egos which allows them to continue to be great, love your comment

  • What kind of drumhead its that??? White Max??

  • I just got a drum stand/pad set all the way from scotland which has taken half a year to arrive to New Zealand and it has been used and signed by Jim. I was so amazed and happy lol.

Im only 15 and have been drumming for two years now. Jim u inspire me =]

  • awesome drummer !

  • jim you are the greatest - excellent drummer !

  • wow... amazing!

  • That is so incredible!

  • Excellent!

  • No it's not a traditional grip but there's no denying he's a badd ass player. "Throwing Down" is "Throwing down" no matter what your grip is.

  • you said it!!! thats what ive been tryna tell the other drummers on my line!!

  • Traditional grip is always played with the left hand only. It comes from the old war drummers who had to play that way because the drum was slung over the shoulder.

  • Big mistake. If you are left handed you perform it with the right!

  • lol no im lefty and i play traditional with the left hand

  • well it makes sense because the old war drummers would want to be uniform. Seeing how most people are right handed, if you wanted to drum and you were left handed...better learn the "right" way.

  • well of course you are all forgetting the reverse traditional grip that a lot of Irish snare drummers use.

Field Marshall Montgomery's corps has half of the corp using reverse and thats because thats how they grew up learning

they pull off a uniform look and sound through lots of practice.

It's all a matter of taste

  • What's wrong with his right hand grip? It's not the standard traditional grip.

  • woow amazing!

  • q cabron.....

  • Is that a Rebonds setup I see off to the side?

  • i have been to one of his workshop he is so good

  • Jim your from fuckin mars

  • jim is the best of the best-jeez i would love to be able to play like that-you are really awesome-that was too amazing

  • Volunteer Sean McIlvenna Republican Flute Band, Maxi RFB is way better ;)

  • ayayai! muchas trampa tambor grande!

  • thanks joeyOso ill try this for a few weeks and let you know how i get on.

  • WTF!!! this guy is f**king amazing!!! My brain just exploded within my skull.

  • yes, that should be expected.

  • I have never seen somebody play like jim kilpatrick i would love to be able to play like him one day

  • Honestly. Realistically i would like to be able to do the thumb as the right hand first finger as the left hand though.

  • m.s.r

  • This is a question for pipedrumers in general.I keep getting pains in my right shoulder, every time i do my press rolls,is this a technique problem,a muscle problem,a tention problem or a relaxation problem,i thought this would be the best place to ask,as most good pipedrumers know who jim kilpatrick is and i know all you people want to help, thanks.

  • ur probably using it too much as in too much practice; try relaxing it for a week or two and after stregthen ur fingers by pinching together or index and thumb finger and moving in and out ur orhter fingers. quick excercise stregthems the fingers for ur rolls.

  • Yeah i agree with Joey - You get more control of your stick with your fingers than your wrist. I usually practise single strokes with the inside of my left hand on the table so my hand doesnt move, and you're just using your thumb, try and keep your right hand still as well and practise using your first finger, then your middle finger then all four fingers on the stick.

  • I usually use the kp3's after the season has finished to build up the strength in my fingers so when i go back to the kp2's i have more control, no doubt - he is a legend. He examined me at school for my exams hehe

  • Scratch that- he has 16 world solo titles and 18 world drum corp titles!! :O:O

  • omw shut up he's like thee best in the world!! He has 8 world titles!! His signature are on my drumsticks! =D

  • my drumsticks have his signature on them! =D

  • damn!!!!!

  • Thats amazing.

  • I'm not much into the pipe drumming stuff, but I still know good hands when I see them, and they were right here in this vid.

  • could this man be compared to Alex Duthart?

  • 1:46 amazing face of that man

    sick video

  • vaya crack el hombre este, parece imposible llegar a tocar como él

  • este tío es el puto amo

  • It's hard to compare Scottish drumming with American drum corp stuff. There are so many differences.

As far as Scottish drumming goes, Jim Kilpatrick is man. Probably followed closely by the rest of the guys in Shotts & Dykehead.

  • hes sick, but not much compared to the DCI guys...like his licks at the end....pretty slow compared

  • Its a different style, so it's different

  • kool beans.

  • not gonna lie that looks like eastman

  • that guy could probably blast beat like a sonofabitch

  • HAHAHAHA yeah man seriously. I look at roddys hand technique and my jow drops. And this chubby scotsman pull that shit off twice as fast with his left hand in traditional. Fucking unbelivable

  • tremendo maestro del tambor

  • L E G E N D

  • mama..daddy..LL;RR.....wow!

  • wow. that's all. wow.

  • Jim is the very very hot player on rudimental style!!!

  • i agree kp2s are much better i used to play with eric wards but i had a shot of kp2s and preferd them and i also tried kp3s and thyr heavier than eric wards and thyr much harder to drum with

  • haha (Alucard1310) funny face 1:43 :-)

  • i agree wiv johnboy14 i prefer the KP2 over the 1 and 3 as it has the best compromise of ease of use and balance but still gives off a meaty sound

  • I find it difficult to drum with the KP3. Its to big and awkward. The KP2 is a much better stick.

  • WOW

  • I met Jim at a clinic in Cardiff, you couldn't meet a nicer person. He blew my mind with his drum skills and then bought me a pint :-)

  • LOL! Pause at 1:43

  • god i used to do all this, takes me back! i even went to see jim once! god the memories

  • when I had a lesson with him and Blair I was practically shaking I was so nervous...hes so amazing

  • jim kilpatrick rocks
