  • If those are smelt, they are freaking huge!!

  • @canmoore They are the average smelt that come into this river. The smelt are in now but not up this far yet. I hope to get a video of this years run....

  • I assure you guys that they are sockeye salmons. NOT smelts. I've been analyzing freshwater and saltwater fisheries for 12 years. Trust me.

  • @MrJackassjerry Ha! Well it looks like another 12 years of analyzing for you! There is no sockeye salmon run in this river. I have lived here for 25 years and this is the annual smelt run. Trust me! Thanks for watching!.....Roger

  • Was is open for dipping wen theres that many ?

  • Those are not smelt. They are salmon.

  • @MrJackassjerry Ha! I have lived on this river over 25 years. I assure you those are smelt. The salmon are not running that time of year. Those are MUCH smaller than salmon. Trust me they are smelt....

  • @MrJackassjerry have you ever seen a salmon before? a salmon that size would not be found in freshwater.

  • @MrJackassjerry

    Are you retarded??

  • Hi dude, Im in Australia and have only just heard of smelts...are they just a small fish or fingerling or what???? liking ya vids to dude.

  • @hannandude Thanks for watching! They are small like a small herring bait. We use them for Sturgeon bait. We eat a few and smoke a few. Native Americans called them candle fish because they have so much oil that they used them as light..

  • I love smelt

  • Cool, never been smelting....looks like I'm missing something\

  • Awesome video, i so hope they make a come back. I would love to dip them for some sturgeon candy.

  • @MrGetthenet I don't know how long they will be on endangered list. I think now that they cannot commercial net them in the Columbia River they will recover fast. Thanks for watching!

  • lake superior is full of them, are the ones there from the sea?

  • @BahtPannerMan Yes they come up the Columbia River into tributary's such as this river the Cowlitz

  • I have had some fun catchen those smelt back east. big nets we use, great to fry up.

  • @BahtPannerMan Yeah we used to be able to dip them until this year. They are on the endangered list.

    Thanks for watching.

  • thats a great vid man

  • Good to see......hopefully they recover.

  • Great video! Thanks for posting on Ifish.net!!

  • I wonder where they stop?

  • Columbia River and all tributaries are now closed to smelt fishing/dipping - they are now on the endangered species list. Sad commentary...
