thomaskenneally > shut the fuck up please. you sound pedant. the beatles sang in pitch 40 years before this was recorded. undoubtedly, with crappier sound equipment. i think mike kinsella was just singing off key like a shitty singer. i love this band, but he sings like a tone deaf 5 year old on this video. - Jonathan Hunsucker.
@himheartagram69 i mean, he's playing pretty complicated stuff in difficult time signatures. early beatles stuff isn't that technical, at least not for the people singing. and it's different acoustics and shit when you're in a basement
@GoodTimesRadTimes Well sir, Actually, you can do it however you want. Some people record full band jam's, other prefer to multi-track. Depends what kind of sound your looking for, and how precise you can be on the jam.
the vocals are gonna be a little off. i mean it's a live setting. anyone that's ever played guitar/sang in a band knows what i'm talkin about when i say that in these kinda scenarios you're not dealing with monitors and shit like that. sometimes you just gotta kinda approximate your pitch and hope that shit's right. perfect pitch records are for people like seal, sting, madonna...you know, people with one name. besides, the wavering voice gives more character and authenticity to the lyrics.
Mike's vocals were always a little rough live (still are, he just doesn't belt it out like he used to). I actually like Mike's singing style in AF better than with Owen. I wish he'd belt it out like that once in a while now.
Also, little known fact. Steve Holmes wrote all (or nearly all) these songs... major contributions/collaboration from mike and lamos obviously, but holmes actually came up with most of the music first and they added to it (think mike wrote most of the words though).
well it is possible, but then again you have take into consideration that this was ten years ago, and he has honed his voice with owen, at least for the most part. i dunno
To be fair the vocals have always been off kilter slightly. Which is part of the appeal of their music. Thanks for uploading this, can't imagine there is any live footage of American Football out there
American Football and most every other project any Kinsellas been involved in rocks, but he kinda sounds a little crazy in this video. Good stuff though!!! :]
this band is so damn brilliant.....love them.

The off-key, melancholic vocals adds a sense of sincerity and pain that talent can't buy.

when you record you don't play bass while singing. you do them seperately.
